Transcript: BY: Shante + Sohpia + Alicja + Rita Youth Empowerment: Building Community Support ABOUT SUMMARY Many lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and queer-identified (LGBTQ) youth face discrimination and isolation fostered by their own social systems that serve them in their daily lives. What drives us WHAT DRIVES US Molly Latham (n.d.), professor at University of Nevada, states that “young people who get involved in their communities are more likely to have stronger work ethic, do well in school, and develop leadership skills”. THE IMPACT Impact The purpose of this group is to get the LGBTQ youth active within their community, such aiding towards helping them to feel connected than excluded around their peers, creating a source of inspiration and connection to what the community can offer, and finding a way to fulfill a need of purpose in life. DIVING DEEPER DIVING DEEPER A study showed that, “40% of youth who reported feeling sad or hopeless in their social enviroment, compared to 26% of heterosexual youth” (District of Columbia Public Schools, 2007) LGBT YOUTH Statistics Why Get Involved? Participating in community activities gives more opportunities to become an independent and successful adult It provides a group of friends who can help a teen learn more about themself and his taents and help him make better decisions By connecting with the community, a teen is never alone. There is a place to go and people to talk with when they needs to Purpose Purpose The purpose of this group is to get the LGBTQ youth active within their community, such aiding towards helping them to feel connected than excluded around their peers, creating a source of inspiration and connection to what the community can offer, and finding a way to fulfill a need of purpose in life DETAILS Where When What Members Facilitators Meeting Space Compass Community Center Mondays 5-6pm for 5 weeks Open-floor plan geared for active learning Culturally sensetive, tained LCSW + existing Compass faciltator LGBTQ youth ages 12-19 that want help feeling more empowered through work within their community. Mission statement “We accomplish this by emboldening our youth, promoting pride in our community, and acting as an educator, advocate, health service provider, and focal point for community organizing” (Compass Community Center, 2017) Psychoeducational Group THE GROUP Outline Goals To empower and build confidence amongst LGBT Youth To help youth understand the positive changes they have within their own communities by defining their individual strenghts To define and create a vision of a shared community To identify common goals for change Being a psychoeducational group, were able to help youth understand the positive changes they have within their own communities.
