Contributions Nelson Mandela Facts Hero Born: July 18, 1918, Mvezo, South Africa Died: December 5, 2013, Houghton Estate, Johannesburg, South Africa Contribution #2 Cultural Mandela was sworn in as president on May 10, 1994. He was the first Black president of South Africa. As president he established the Truth and Reconcilation Commission. This organization investigated the political and human rights violations that were committed by both opponents and supporters of apartheid between 1960 and 1994. Timeline Contribution #1 Political Mandela made a lot of contributions to his society. He made both political and cultural contributions. Mandela also tried to improve race relations. He did this by discouraging blacks from retaliating back at the whites. He tried to build a new image for South Africa as a "Rainbow Nation" (Mandela). Interesting Facts 1. He wrote an autobiography, "Long Walk to Freedom" 2. He went to jail for 27 years 3. Even though Mandela was devoted to creating peace, earlier in his life he took part in multiple violent prtotests that later in life put him behind bars. Overview -Mandela spent most his life in South Africa. -He was an activist in South Africa and was their president. - He was an activist for human rights and bringing an end to apartheid. - " Education is the most powerful weapon, which you can use to change the world" (Mandela). Contribution #1 Political Contribution Bin Laden founded Al-Qaeda. This is an extremist, violent terrorist group founded in the late 1980's. Al-Qaeda had training camps placed all over to train its agents. Al-Qaeda is responsible for numerous terrorist attacks. Some of which include, destruction of multiple U.S. embassies, the suicide bombing against the U.S. warship "Cole", 9/11, and more. Osama bin Laden Osama Bin Laden made both political and cultural contributions to society. Contribution #2 Cultural Osama Bin Laden was responsible for the 9/11 terrorist attacks. 9/11 was when 19 Al-Qaeda agents hijjacked 4 American flights and crashed them into the World trade Center, Pentagon, and a field in Penselvaina. The flight that crashed in the field was taken down by brave passengers that they were going to attack another monument. However, we will never know for sure what they were going to attack in Washington, D.C. we can assume it was probably the White House. A total of 2,997 people died on 9/11 from the terrorist attacks. 9/11 was the deadliest day in U.S. history for firefighters.
