Winnie The Pooh

Transcript: Winnie-The-Bear was so loved dearly by the soldiers. They played with her, and took great care of her, always keeping her safe and sound. The photographs that they took of Winnie became precious memories for them to take home and cherish forever. At the London Zoo, Winnie became a friend to many, especially young Christopher Robin. The zoo treasured her because of her loving and tame behavior, and built two statues in honor of their special friend. Winnie-The-Bear did all of this, AND she inspired the classic character, Winnie-The-Pooh. Who Is Winnie The Pooh? This story began with a Canadian lieutenant-turned-Captian named Harry Colebourn, who bought a black bear cub for $20 from a hunter who had killed her mother. He named her "Winnipeg," after his hometown, but he called her "Winnie" for short. Winnie became the mascot of the Brigade for which Harry worked, and even went with the unit to Britian! Harry took care of his dear friend very well, and she even stayed on the base with him! Winnie literally lived on a military base with the troops! Later on, Harry was promoted to Captain, and he could not take Winnie with him to his new position, so, Winnie stayed at the London Zoo. Harry visited Winnie whenever he was on leave, but he ended up donating Winnie to the zoo because she was so popular with everyone, and he felt it was unfair to take her back to Canada with him. A young boy named Christopher Robin visited the London Zoo regularly, and fell in love with Winnie. He was infact, so in love with this adorable bear cub, that he spent a lot of time inside of Winnie's cage. Winnie fell in love with Christopher Robin, and they formed a strong bond. Christopher named his own teddy bear after Winnie, calling him Winnie The Pooh, (the name Pooh was taken from the name of a swan) Christopher's father was actually author A.A. Milne, and it was his father who began writing children's books about Winnie The Pooh's and Christopher Robin's adventures together. Milne was inspired by things in his own life, and used these things in his very popular books. For example, the characters named Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo were all based on more of Christopher Robin's stuffed animals, and the characters named Rabbit and Owl were actually live animals who also reside in the London Zoo. Milne's books became popular all around the world, and were loved by everyone-younge and old. Infact, Walt Disney's own daughters were totally inlove with these stories. It was this love that inspired Walt Disney to create animated movies based on these amazing story books. To think...this entire story began with one lonely bear cub, $20, and a kind, loving lieutenant!!!!!!! Winnie The Pooh And Winnipeg Too! Why Was Winnie So Important? So What? It is important to learn about the story of Winnie-The-Bear and Winnie-The-Pooh for many reasons: This story allows us to have insight into the life of some of the Canadian troops because this story unveils transportation methods, job positions, residential situations, etc... Winnie-The-Bear brought happiness to the lives of many troops and regular citizens in a very difficult time. Winnie-The-Bear was a part of the Second Canadian Infantry Brigade! Winnie-The-Pooh is one of the most known and loved characters around the world, and he brings happiness to many lives. It is fascinating to see that the Bear With Little Brain is actually a part of Canadian history, thanks to his mother, Winnie-The-Bear. This story is full of happiness and love, which is a light for the world during WW1. Winnie-The-Bear showed us how loving and incredible animals truly are, and that we need to treat them with love and respect, as they do for us! Timeline of Winnie The Pooh Winnie the Black Bear Cub was very important to not only Harry, but to his entire unit of troops. She became the pet of the Second Canadian Infantry Brigade Headquarters, and a mascot to the C.A.V.C., which was another organization for which Harry worked. Winnie slept under Harry's cot every night, and she was loved by everyone in the unit. However, Winnie was not only important in the military. She was important to the London Zoo. People of all ages fell in love with her, and the zoo said that she was the best behaved bear that they ever had. They were able to trust her, which they had never been able to do with any other bear. What Is The Story Of These Bears? 1914 August 24, 1914 September 12, 1914 October 3, 1914 Winnie the bear Harry Colebourn bought Harry became part of the Harry and Winnie boarded cub was brought a black bear cub for $20, Second Canadian Infantry a ship enroute for Davenport, to White River. and later named her Winnipeg Brigade Headquarters, under England, with many other (Winnie) the command of Arthur Currie troops. Transcript: The Winnie-the-Pooh stories are set in Ashdown Forest, Sussex, England. The forest is a large area of tranquil open heathland on the highest sandy ridges of the High Weald Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty situated 30 miles (50 km) south of London. In 1925 Milne, a Londoner, bought a country home a mile to the north of the forest at Cotchford Farm, near Hartfield. According to Christopher Milne, while his father continued to live in London "...the four of us—he, his wife, his son and his son's nanny—would pile into a large blue, chauffeur-driven Fiat and travel down every Saturday morning and back again every Monday afternoon. And we would spend a whole glorious month there in the spring and two months in the summer." After Slesinger's death in 1953, his wife, Shirley Slesinger Lasswell, continued developing the character herself. In 1961, she licensed rights to Walt Disney Productions in exchange for royalties in the first of two agreements between Stephen Slesinger, Inc. and Disney. The same year, A. A. Milne's widow, Daphne Milne, also licensed certain rights, including motion picture rights, to Disney. Winnie the Pooh (Disney) with his gangs. First publication On 6 January 1930, Stephen Slesinger purchased U.S. and Canadian merchandising, television, recording and other trade rights to the "Winnie-the-Pooh" works from Milne for a $1000 advance and 66% of Slesinger's income, creating the modern licensing industry. By November 1931, Pooh was a $50 million-a-year business Disney This is Disneyland. There are three claimants, depending on the precise question posed. Christopher Robin's teddy bear, Edward, made his character début in a poem called "Teddy Bear" in Milne's book of children's verse When We Were Very Young (6 November 1924) although his true first appearance was in the 13 February 1924 edition of Punch magazine, which contained the same poem along with other stories by Milne and Shepard. The first time Pooh and his friends appeared in colour was 1932, when he was drawn by Slesinger in his now-familiar red shirt and featured on an RCA Victor picture record. Parker Brothers also introduced A. A. Milne's Winnie-the-Pooh Game in 1933, again with Pooh in his red shirt. In the 1940s, Agnes Brush created the first plush dolls with Pooh in his red shirt. Shepard had drawn Pooh with a shirt as early as the first Winnie-The-Pooh book, which was subsequently coloured red in later coloured editions. Disney Catoons This is Disney logo. Christopher's toys also lent their names to most of the other characters, except for Owl, Rabbit, and Gopher. Gopher was added to the Disney version. Christopher Robin's toy bear is now on display at the Main Branch of the New York Public Library in New York City. An authorized sequel Return to the Hundred Acre Wood was published on 5 October 2009. The author, David Benedictus, has developed, but not changed, Milne's characterizations.
