Transcript: Winnie-The-Bear was so loved dearly by the soldiers. They played with her, and took great care of her, always keeping her safe and sound. The photographs that they took of Winnie became precious memories for them to take home and cherish forever. At the London Zoo, Winnie became a friend to many, especially young Christopher Robin. The zoo treasured her because of her loving and tame behavior, and built two statues in honor of their special friend. Winnie-The-Bear did all of this, AND she inspired the classic character, Winnie-The-Pooh. Who Is Winnie The Pooh? This story began with a Canadian lieutenant-turned-Captian named Harry Colebourn, who bought a black bear cub for $20 from a hunter who had killed her mother. He named her "Winnipeg," after his hometown, but he called her "Winnie" for short. Winnie became the mascot of the Brigade for which Harry worked, and even went with the unit to Britian! Harry took care of his dear friend very well, and she even stayed on the base with him! Winnie literally lived on a military base with the troops! Later on, Harry was promoted to Captain, and he could not take Winnie with him to his new position, so, Winnie stayed at the London Zoo. Harry visited Winnie whenever he was on leave, but he ended up donating Winnie to the zoo because she was so popular with everyone, and he felt it was unfair to take her back to Canada with him. A young boy named Christopher Robin visited the London Zoo regularly, and fell in love with Winnie. He was infact, so in love with this adorable bear cub, that he spent a lot of time inside of Winnie's cage. Winnie fell in love with Christopher Robin, and they formed a strong bond. Christopher named his own teddy bear after Winnie, calling him Winnie The Pooh, (the name Pooh was taken from the name of a swan) Christopher's father was actually author A.A. Milne, and it was his father who began writing children's books about Winnie The Pooh's and Christopher Robin's adventures together. Milne was inspired by things in his own life, and used these things in his very popular books. For example, the characters named Eeyore, Piglet, Tigger, Kanga, and Roo were all based on more of Christopher Robin's stuffed animals, and the characters named Rabbit and Owl were actually live animals who also reside in the London Zoo. Milne's books became popular all around the world, and were loved by everyone-younge and old. Infact, Walt Disney's own daughters were totally inlove with these stories. It was this love that inspired Walt Disney to create animated movies based on these amazing story books.
