Sonnets 71-74, are grouped together and they all talk about the poet's mortality. Here, the poet is going through his "old age" and knowing that he is the oldest, he expresses his love towards a young man. This focus in humanity, made artists, writers, and philosophers to be inquisitive about the world around them and they started to be more concerned about the human being. -Here is where the poet asks the young man to forget him because if not, his memories would cause him pain No longer mourn for me when I am dead Than you shall hear the surly sullen bell Give warning to the world that I am fled From this vile world with vilest worms to dwell: Nay, if you read this line, remember not The hand that writ it, for I love you so That I in your sweet thoughts would be forgot, If thinking on me then should make you woe. O if, I say, you look upon this verse When I perhaps compounded am with clay, Do not so much as my poor name rehearse, But let your love even with my life decay, Lest the wise world should look into your moan And mock you with me after I am gone. No longer mourn for me when I am dead IRONY SOURCES Playwright Do not mourn for me when I am dead Just until you hear the surly sullen bell Notify the world that I have left From this vile world to move where the worms are If you read this line, do not remember Who wrote it, because i love you so much That i prefer you forget me If thinking on me would disturb you. O if you look upon this poem When I am nothing else than ashes, Do not even think in my name But let your love decay as i am gone So that the people do not pry into your grief And mock you with me after I am dead Hear the surly sullen bell - Apostrophe: addressing someone who is not really there (at the time he is writing) -Personification: surly sullen bell (line 2) and the wise world (line 13) -Metaphor: let your love even with my life decay (line 12) -His plays, reflected his knowledge of Greek and Roman classics that were forbidden during the middle ages. Sonnet 71 Quatrain 1 was an English Actor LANGUAGE -It is firmly against mourning after death, but it does mourn the dead by advising the world he has gone. Quatrain 3 SONNET 71 Shakespeare invented a uniquely English version of the Renaissance by putting together the plots of ancient tragedies with the histories of medieval England. It describes how Europeans separated from the restrictive ideas of the middle ages of the importance of faith, god, and the church.
