Transcript: Mentoring Program The minimum GPA is a 3.3. Scholars receive up to $3,000 to work with a professor. Most students work on faculty mentor's research project. Undergraduate Research "Anything is research" This office helps students into decisions based on research. Some of the questions that they will help you answer is which form of research will benefit you the most. Also they help you through either individualized meetings or you getting involved through the Discover Program which lasts an entire semester. Lastly, students can use these services from guest speakers or ambassadors. Study Abroad You can use undergraduate research to travel to the place you want to with the study abroad program. For example, recently a student got to go to South Africa because he was doing research about the World Cup. How to Get Started This matches students with mentors (usually grad students but also other faculty members) for professional relationships. Helps to build relationships with teachers and other important figures at the school. Program that will be listed on your transcript that matches you with a mentor/professor in your major. Not only does this add credit, but also is simply a great experience to have, and skill to know for the future. Undergraduate research also helps gain real-world experience in college which is very important for employers Why students should utilize the office's services Alex Davis, Kelly Carpenter, Hannah Parcel, Garrett Shank Contact Information "Research is only for juniors and seniors -NO! You can start your 1st semester of college Research Means LOTS of papers and writing -NO! it can be hands on experience where you test drive a career You can only conduct research in your major -NO! You can research any area you are interested in" -("Research Myths"). Research Myths The student must be the primary presenter to qualify for the funds. This covers travel expenses to regional to international meetings, art shows, musical performances..ect! Recipients receive up to $1,000 to work one-on-one with faculty in a project of interest. Undergraduate research is not just for science related majors and can even lead to you getting paid for helping with the research. Like the Mini-Grant, recipients receive $1,000 to work on a project of interest. This office is to have assistance ready for any student who is or possibly is pursuing undergraduate research. When most students hear research they want to run in the other direction but not all research is in a boring lab environment. -For instance you could do research on how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop Summer Research Opportunities Working closely with faculty allows you to learn about career options, get recommendations, and improve skills for future successes. -Alia Baker Mentor: Dr. Olga Ivashkevich, Art Black Girls Make Movies!: Bridging the Gap Between Race Gender and Technology -Nicole Erich Mentor: Dr. Gerald McDermott, International Business Globalization and High Fashion -Laura Molesky Mentor: Dr. Matthew Irvin, Educational Studies Precollege and College Experiences of Undergraduate Students from Rural Communities If they can do it what can you do? Discovery days are days where students come together and present the research they have been participating in. Any student doing research an enter, not only undergraduate research students. Writing the paper: Outline academic articles always okay from a school database from a reputable journal Google Scholar Stats from .gov or .org best .edu is not always credible Undergraduate research, scholarship, and creative works refers to a range of activities carried out to discover new knowledge and create new work. The terms “scholarship” and “creative works” are more common in the arts and humanities and “research” in the sciences and social sciences. In LAS our undergraduates are leading the way in all of these.
