Transcript: • One of Florida’s 14 “safety-net” hospital systems - all Floridians can receive care regardless of their ability to pay. Safety-net hospitals represent 10 percent of the state’s hospitals but they provide 41 percent of the state’s charity care and nearly 50 percent of all Medicaid hospital care. • Nursing shortage: o recruitment and retention to the profession is crucial o The Future of Nursing report and the Institute of Medicine recommends that 80% of RNs be BSN prepared by 2020 o Existing nurses site many barriers for returning to school including: inflexible work schedules, financial situation, personal responsibilities, family situation, returning to school would be intimidating after being out for so long, lack of financial rewards for returning to school, lack of knowledge of computers and computer programs and lack of time o UF Health encourages staff to continue education through schedule flexibility, hourly increase incentive, tuition reimbursement, grants and scholarships and negotiating tuition discounts with many universities. o UF Health currently at 57.6% of nurses with a BSN or higher. o All new ASN nurses are required to sign a contract to be in a BSN program within one year of hire date and complete it in 3 years to reach 2020 goal of 80% BSN 2008, Medicare implemented the Hospital-Acquired Conditions (HACs) Initiative Policy denying incremental payment for 8 Hospital-Acquired Conditions UF Health Shands monitors and records all occurrences of these events, analyses root cause and has formed unit specific and interdisciplinary hospital wide taskforces for each category in efforts to decrease the occurrences. FY2015, Hospital-Acquired Condition Reduction Program Public mandated by the Affordable Care Act reporting of health care–associated infections and assessment of hospital penalties IRS requires nonprofit hospitals to document community contributions due to tax-exempt status engages in community benefit activities providing care to indigent patients and participating in Medicaid $128.4 million in unreimbursed charity care at cost $7 million for community and regional health services $2.7 million on donations and in-kind services $37.3 million on health professional’s education $15.7 million on scientific and clinical research Thank You!
