Public libraries serve an important role A library collection, which contains books of diverse characters and backgrounds, completely reaffirms young people's sense of identity and the importance of their tradition (Williams & Deyoe, 2014, pg. 98). In early childhood education, Children begin to develop a sense of what is being represented in the world Educators can bring value to children's literature Multicultural children's books can be used widely by teachers to help students develop diverse perspectives (Iwai, 2015, p.82). Problem Statement Multicultural literature, especially when combined with exploratory practices has been shown to increase cultural sensitivity and appreciation among young children (Howrey & Whelan-Kim, 2009, p.125). The types of children's picture books accessible to the community in the public library have an impact on children's recognition and awareness of diverse cultures. Specifically, the diverse cultures represented in the community can have an effect on the types of cultures portrayed in children's picture books in the local library. Purpose of the Study examine whether the various cultures represented in the community can affect the types of cultures represented in the children's picture books of the local library. Research Question How is cultural diversity represented in children's picture books at two local libraries? Rationale Over the past century there has been a dramatic increase in cultural diversity within communities in Ontario. It is important that those who influence the development and distribution of children's books have the expertise and cultural insight they need when dealing with texts. Themes in children's stories tend to be similar and provide a common ground that can serve as a basis for respectful and substantive discussion of differences (Howrey & Whelan-Kim, 2009, p.125). Chapter 2 Theoretical basis & Literature Review Chapter 2 Theoretical Basis Bronfenbrenner's ecological systems theory The ecological system model consists of five levels of the environment— the microsystem, the mesosystem, the exosystem, macrosystem and Chronosystem—with each level having a different effect on each individual's development (Bronfenbrenner, 1979). Ecological viewpoint is useful because it enables a simultaneous emphasis on the individual child's features, the vital home setting, and the pervasive cultural environment (Jordan, 2004, p. 196). Literature Review Key Themes Importance of Multicultural children’s literature Excellent platform for educators and children to focus on cultural issues (Howrey & Whelan-Kim, 2009, p.125) Educators Reflections on Multicultural Literature Teachers who want to connect with the concept of diversity will either review collections of children's books that can be found on the web or visit their local public library Literature Review Importance of Children Seeing Themselves in Books When children cannot identify with a book or see their lives celebrated through stories, it may have a negative impact on their self-image (Koss, 2015, p.32). Chapter 3 Methodology Approach Chapter 3 Research Design Qualitative study Content analysis, as a technique, provides new insights, increases the understanding of specific phenomena by a researcher, or informs practical actions (Krippendorff, 1980, p.21). Content analysis Research technique for constructing replicable and accurate inferences from texts (or other relevant subjects) to the context of their use (Krippendorff, 1980, p.21). Sampling Technique Homogeneous sampling "Certain sites or individuals are selected because they possess a similar trait or characteristic" (Mertler, 2019, p.168). Transcript: Circle of Words: The impact of graphic organizers on first language vocabulary acquisition by Josh Harnden Research Questions 1.What is the best method to help students acquire vocabulary? 2. Are GOs (Graphic Organizers) more effective for vocabulary acquisition in regards to ELL and special needs populations or for use in general education classrooms? 3. Are GOs effective learning tools for the long-term retention of vocabulary? GOs are great for comprehension, but are able to push students to Bloom’s higher thinking levels, urging students beyond mere comprehension to the levels of analysis, synthesis, and evaluation, which are levels all students can reach, not merely the gifted (Paziotopoulos and Kroll, 2004). Traditional method of vocabulary acquisition in school: 1. Rote memorization of word and definition. 2. Use in sentences. 3. Memorization of synonyms and antonyms. The vocabulary circle utilizes the best of traditional means and orders it on the page in a coherent map. Most research with GOs have focused on comprehension, specifically comprehension in the use of teaching special needs students or in working with ELL students. The Method The research design was based off a pretest-posttest control group design with both grades worth of classes. Study 1 Four ELA (English Language Arts) classes (two tenth grade honors and two junior general education) will be given a pretest of thirty vocabulary terms. They will then be provided with a list of the words and the definitions. Experimental Groups Two of the classes, one honors and one junior, will be taught how to study using vocabulary circles. Control Group One of each grade level class will be told to study by: Night 1, writing a page worth of synonyms for each word Night 2, use the words in sentences Night 3, draw graphic representations of each word Night 4, writing a page worth of antonyms for each word All groups will then take a test at the end of the week on the thirty words. The groups will then be tested again at the end of the following week. Study 2 Two classes of ELL students and two special needs classes will take part in the same study. The purpose of this is to determine whether or not the benefits of the use of GO are stronger in the general population or with the two main subgroups most schools focus differentiation on. Results The expected results are that the students using the vocabulary circles will have a higher rate of retention regarding the vocabulary than those groups that study the traditional way. One other expectation is that the students who have special needs regarding retention and acquisition as well as ELL students will make higher gains than general education students through the use of the GOs. The study will take place in the Covina Valley School District at Covina High School. Overall expectation is that approximately 200 to 250 students will take part in the study. Questions?

Transcript: Water for Life: The Impact of Privatization on Water Services Quality Presentation by: Katya Lara S. Macaraeg Introduction Foreshadowed Problem Research Statement Presentation Outline Significance of the Study Scope and Delimitations of the Study Perspectives in the Study of Water Privatization Relevant Theories Related Studies Related Literature Conceptual Framework Methods and Techniques of the Study Informants of the Study Research Instrument Data Gathering Procedure Ethical Consideration Metro Manila Water Crisis Privatization in the Water Sector Impact of Privatization Introduction Summary In July 2010, the United Nations Assembly adopted a resolution recognizing water and sanitation as an essential aspect for the enjoyment of life and shall be declared as a human right In 2016, water and sanitation were promoted to a full-fledged goal as the Sustainable Goal No. 6, to “Ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all.” As driven by international organizations such as the World Bank and Internal Monetary Fund, partnerships between the state and private sector became rampant across the globe to accomplish the goal of water sustainability for all and therefore address the human right to water. Introduction Summary With the primary initiative to resolve the increasing water shortage in Metro Manila, President Fidel V. Ramos declared a state policy to address the nationwide water crisis by adopting urgent and effective measures. One primary subject of the policy includes the involvement of the private sector in aiding the national crisis. Using the concept of concession agreements adopted from other countries, the government had decided to turn over the responsibility of maintenance and operations of Metro Manila water utilities into two service areas: The Eastern and Western Zone. The two private concessions were then awarded to Manila Water and Maynilad. Introduction Summary The tale of the two concessions illustrates the risks and benefits of privatization, thus providing privatization benchmarks to replicate the success story of Manila Water to aspiring local water utilities in the country. The provision of quality water services often entails expensive maintenance and operations costs, which the customers shoulder through the increased water rates. Thus, utility operators under government ownership resort to other financial sources such as subsidies, international financial aids, local and foreign loans. Introduction Summary Wanting to achieve the same goal of improved service quality and overall performance of the local water districts, San Jose Del Monte Water District, Marilao Water District, Meycauayan Water District, and Obando Water District have recently undergone water reform through privatization. This study aims to answer how the organization reform through privatization will contribute to accomplishing the objectives of the water utilities and how to overcome the challenges encountered by the end-users and stakeholders of the water service providers because of the agency’s change in ownership. Specifically, the study seeks answers to the following questions: 2. What was the previous status of the water services quality under state-run local water utilities? 1. What is the current status of the service quality of private water utilities in the district? Foreshadowed Problem 4. What were the disadvantages of privatization to the water services quality? 3. What were the beneficial outcomes of privatization in increasing the service quality of the previously publicly owned and managed water utilities? The general problem of the study is: How did privatization change the water services quality of the local water utilities in the 4th district of Bulacan? 5. What are the challenges encountered by the concessionaires and local water utilities in migrating to private sector entities? 6. How do private water companies sustain their business in the district? 7. What are the proposed strategies should private water services providers and sewerage companies need to implement to sustain the water services quality within the parameters? Research Statement The researcher formulated the general assumption of the study that “privatization of the local water utilities in 4th District of Bulacan significantly improves the water services quality.” Significance of the Study Philippine National and Local Government Local Water Utilities’ Top Management and Key Decision Makers Concessionaires the proponent believes that the proposed research will be beneficial to the following stakeholders: Employees of Water Districts Future Researchers Water Utility Regulators SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY SCOPE AND DELIMITATIONS OF THE STUDY The focus of the study will be the impact of privatization on water services quality of the privatized water utilities.
