Transcript: Secret Life of Stone Mountain Who Came Up With the Idea?! Technically, a member of the Daughter's of the Confederacy, a very old organization of daughters of soldiers who served in the Confederate forces. (It still exists.) Of course, the sculptors contributed after the project started. Sam Venable, the owner of the mountain at the time also contributed. Who Were the Sculptors? The first sculptor was Gutzon Borglum He was drew up the first sketch of what the carving would look like in 1915 and his work did not begin until 1923. On Febuary 19, 1924, his contract was cancelled because of outbursts on his part as well as disagreements with funding and involvement with the Ku Klux Klan, The second sculptor was Augustus Lukeman He took the project over in 1925. After blasting Borglum's work away, he began his own carving of Stonewall Jackson, Robert E. Lee and Jefferson Davis. His work ended in 1928 because The Venable Family reclaimed the mountain, ending all work on it. The carving was once again uncomplete. The third sculptor was Walter Hancock He took over the project in 1964 after the the mountain and surrounding land had been purchased by the State of Georgia to create Stone Mountain Park. He completed the work in 1927. How Long did the Memorial Take to Carve??? All together, with the breaks, war, and funding issues, 49 years. Not including the breaks in between it took roughly 13 years *It took 49 years to complete something that could have taken 13 or less years!! Some Unanswered Questions... Roughly, how many people were involved in the making of the Stone Mountain Memorial? How many deaths were associated with the carving?! Some more background information about the Native Americans and Ku Klux Klan involvement The complete Stone Mountain Memorial! Borglum's work from 1924! This is what Lukeman blasted off of the mountain I hope that you've learned a little about Stone Mountain that you didn't know before! Granite is one of the most renowned, most durable, and most pristine building materials. It withstands the elements exceedingly well. This natural stone suits your home’s interior as well as its exterior. GRANITE MARBLE Marble is more esthetically valuable and is available in a broader range of colors. It is regarded highly for its strength, beauty, and resistance to fire. This natural stone is used widely in buildings, sculptures, and monuments. The cavities are filled with colored epoxy, matching Portland cement, or polyester resins. The cavities are also left unfilled to give a more rustic appearance. Since travertine can be easily stained and scratched, surface sealing and special care is mandatory for its maintenance. Travertine is used for fireplace surrounds, vanity tops, furniture, wall cladding, and flooring. TRAVERTINE SANDSTONE The color of sandstone varies from gray, cream, brown, green to red, depending on its composition. Reddish-brown sandstone, labeled Brownstone, was widely used in residential construction. Sandstone is suitable for your home’s interior and exterior. It’s used as flooring and paving material. Transcript: The Histrory of Rolling Stone Magazine Rolling Stone Magazine The first issue of Rolling Stone was Released on Nov. 6 1967 The creators of Rolling Stone Magazine initially intended to cover different artistic tastes and political sensibilities for students The magazine was a combination of passion and professionalism Creators Creators The magazine was founded co-founded by Ralph Gleson a Jazz Critic and Jann Wenner former University of California student in San Francisco in 1967. Wenner Media maintained 51% ownership of Rolling Stone Magazine until December 2017. Penske Media Corporation purchased the remaining 49% of the company and now retains the rights to the magazine, events and licensing rights, and the entity to Rolling Stone International Early Publications The first issue of Rolling Stone printed 40,000 copies but 6,000 of them were returned By 1994 the magazine had a circulation of 325,000 The first magazine cost 25 cents which is equivalent to $1.94 today.
