Transcript: MEDIEVAL STAINED GLASS Some of the earliest known examples of coloured window glass, datable to c. 800–820, were recovered in excavations at the Abbey of San Vicenzo in Volturno, Italy. Glass of the same colour ranges and similar date is also found in England, at the monastic sites of Jarrow and Monkwearmouth, and at other sites in the north of England. These examples are not painted. However it was not until the advent of the monumental cathedral and church building campaigns in the 11th and 12th centuries that the demand for coloured glass began to increase significantly, reaching its highest level in the 14th and 15th centuries. The oldest surviving stained glass windows still in situ are thought to be the Prophet Windows in Augsburg Cathedral, of c. 1065. The King's College Chapel Medieval Stained Glass Made by John and jaydon sTAINED GLASS kINGS COLLAGE CHAPEL The King's College Chapel was built in phases by a succession of kings of England from 1446 to 1515, a period which spanned the Wars of the Roses. Romanesque Stained Glass The Romans varnished glass into windows in the first century AD. At this time, their glass was inconsistent and was nontransparent. In 1878 in a burial ground that was deserted around 1000 AD at Sery les Mezieres, France, Jules Pilloy discovered about 30 pieces of glass that were hurt from an apparent fire, a lead strip with two channels and a small slab of bone surrounded some charred wood. Edmond Socard laid out the glass into a small, simple window. This work of art was well-liked from the sixth to the ninth centuries. Pieces of a very early head of Christ were revealed at Lorsch Abbey in Germany in 1932. The term usually used to describe this is a "misnomer". Stained glass is more the outcome of a procedure rather than glass itself. It is constructed by painting upon a glass (clear or colored) with the oxide of silver. This penetrates the glass when exposed to heat and gives off a yellowish reaction. For constructing a stained glass window, a diversity of glass can be used, but most of the time only one kind is employed. Renaissance Stained Glass in Catholic Churches and Cathedrals Romanesque architecture is more constant than the stained glass that enhances it. Today Romanesque windows seem to look darker because of corrosion. The primitive stained glass windows are more straightforward looking and uncommon. They portray widely known saints or stories from the Bible. High regard for the Virgin Mary is often seen at this time and in Romanesque art, she is frequently represented as queen. The windows use stylized vegetal ornament and ornamental beading around the scenes and figures. The colors are red and blue are mostly used in Romanesque art. This method of stained glass appearsd to have expanded from cloisonne enamels and smaller paintings. Few Romanesque windows remain today. During the Gothic period, stain glass windows went from simple to complicated. They began to be an intricate iconography. As it advanced, it began to use symbolism derived from bestiaries (also called "unnatural history") and on complex typology. The image of heraldry in these stained glass windows indicate the growing significance of nonreligious families. As the advancement of stained glass windows continued, the emergence of recently developed religious orders said that more buildings were needed. Therefore, many cathedrals and churches were constructed with these windows. The Gothic style also progressed outside of France at this time. The stained glass window inside of the Cathedral of Lausanne in Switzerland portrays a distinct French influence. The international Gothic style made its way to Vienna and Prague late. The earliest known stained glass that survived is in Assisi, Italy. It is the work of German glaziers. In the Cathedral of Siena, the oculus is called the "first modern window". In this circled stained glass, the subjects are considered as detached scenes. Transcript: My first step was to make a pattern. Next was to find the glass. After that I had to cut out the pattern pieces and trace them onto the glass. Next I had to apply flux so that the solder has a lower melting point. once the flux was applied I had to solder. Solder is the metal that holds all of it together. Next was grinding and trying to get all the pieces to fit together. For my project I chose to do a stained glass piece. This is something that I have always enjoyed doing. By K. Reimold Once the pieces all fit together, I had to wash and dry each piece to remove the powder made by the grinding process. After cleaning I had to wrap the pieces in copper foil. The foil is there so that the solder can stick to the glass. Designing my own stained glass and making it from three sheets of glass and a few spare materials, it gave me total control over what I did and I found great joy in the process of making something out of things that seemed like nothing. After covering the piece with the flux, I finally got to do the soldering This is my favorite part of making stained glass. Stained Glass Conclusion This is the glass that I chose During the course of this project, I learned that I am capable of doing anything I put my mind to. By doing a stained glass piece I was able to express my creativity. Being able to express that will help me in my career to becoming a great chef by giving me confidence to finish what I set out to do. Then I had to cut the glass

Those include antique, drawn antique, scribed antique, baroque bevels, cathedral glass, catspaw, crackle, dichronic, and drapery glass. It wasn't until around, 1850 that artists started recreating the lost art of stained glass. However, it was cut short because of the depression and World War II. In the recent 3 decades, though, stained glass picked up once again and has since become a popular hobby and skill. In order to make stained glass, people mixed sand with other materials at 300 degrees Fahrenheit and add powders for color. The artist has blue prints of what it should look like. After flatttening the glass into sheets, artists would use their print to cut it into the appropriate sizes. Later, fine details were painted on and the glass was cut in cames, or "H-shaped" strips of lead. From there they were put into the wall to be veiwed by thousands.
