Somalia
Transcript: A, B, C Culture: Three of the jobs in Somalia are livestock, remittance/money transfer companies and telecommunications. Livestock: “one or more domesticated animals raised in an agricultural setting to produce commodities such as food, fiber and labor.” Money transfer companies: where you send money to other people. And telecommunications: like phone, radio... Movement of people, ideas, and goods: There were wars between Ethiopia, Somalia, and Kenya over grazing areas. Over half of Somalian people are nomadic. Many Somalians migrated to the south because there was a drought. There was 1.3 million people in refugee camp because of the political problems. “ Somalis claim large areas of Ethiopia and Kenya as well as Djibuti . Their traders can be found all over east, central and southern Africa. Somali seamen can be found in many ports, including London and Liverpool. In pre-colonial times there was no state structure, other than for the city states.” Geography Influences Culture: Because there are less than 2% of suitable farming land, they don’t have a lot of farming land, they don’t have enough food to eat. The center of the country is mostly cover with grazing land so they have a lot of livestock and they are nomadic. There is fertile land and two big rivers, the Jubba and the Shabeelle, in the south. Because there is fertile land, they grow crops commercially. Because they have two rivers, they can irrigate the land. There have been a lot of droughts and overgrazing in Somalia and this damaged most of the wildlife and vegetation. “Dry, grassy plains cover almost all of Somalia.” That's why Somalia has a lot of grazing land. How Is Somalia Governed:Somalia does not have a working government for almost 20 years. The government in Somalia is trying hard to stay together and often faces violence. There are one president and prime master. The president’s name is Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmad and the prime minister’s name is Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed Farmajo The prime master do most of the work in the government and also there is “parliament made up of 275 members, who are selected from among the many clans (extended family groups) that make up Somali society.” The clan work as a group to solve out family problem. “ a semi-independent region in the north has its own elected president and parliament, but other countries do not recognize the authority of this government.” Most of the political power is controlled by four clans, and the leaders make decisions based on their study of Islamic law (called shari’a). Zoology: One animal that live in Somalia is Acinonyx jubatus (cheetah). It is in the cat family and the fastest of all animal. Though it run fast, it lacks climbing ability. It could run from 0 to over 62 mph in 3 second. “The word "cheetah" is derived from the Sanskrit word citrakāyaḥ, meaning "variegated", via the Hindi चीता cītā. And the genus name, Acinonyx, means "no-move-claw" in Greek, while the species name, jubatus, means "maned" in Latin, a reference to the mane found in cheetah cubs.” Most adult cheetah weight between 36-65kg, total body length 45-53in, tail that is 33in. Most cheetah should be between 26-37in from shoulder to paw.
