Social Worker Outlook Presentation

Transcript: My concerns in choosing this career A few days ago I met with one of our schools social workers, and was able to interview her to get a better insight at the career. Her name was Ms. Davis, she is our student advic here on campus and she is licensed as a social worker. -Was this your ideal job from the very start? No she wanted to be a pediatric Neurosurgeon, and she later realized that was not for her when she went into the hospital and saw blood. -Now after working in this field for awhile are you for sure this is the job you wish to retire from? She said yes, she plans to retire as a social worker. -If you could give anyone going into this field an insight of the job, or something you believe people should know ahead what would that be? She told us that you wont fix everything, you wont be a superhero, not everyone will have a change in their life. Median Salary, hourly wage, and my final thoughts on this career Questions cont. 1. I would say time, I would not just want to spend all my day working, I'd really like to devote time to the family I hope to have one day. 2. Also I would be afraid, because of course we are all humans and we all make mistakes, I would fear having a patient misinterpret my advice and something going worse. 3. I would fear getting to attached, and then getting hurt because I can't change anyone, it would be their choice to take my advice, so I would say I'd fear putting the guilt on myself. The median salary is $46,890.00. The hourly wage is $22.40. Which it is not the best paying job but it really is something I believe I would enjoy doing, even in the hard times, I really am interested in going into this field. Education requirements and future demand in this career Questions cont. You do need a bachelors degree in social work. Recommended schools in Texas : - University of Texas at Arlington - Tarleton State University - University of North Texas - Prairie View A&M University Three reasons that pull me to this field -What has been one of the toughest obstacles you have had to face working in this field? She said letting the client be self determinant, not getting too upset when the client does not listen or take the advice she gives. -Would you rather work regular shift hours or be on call for when needed? She said she has worked both, when she first worked for cps, she was on call 24/7 365 days so you could not ever have plans secured. After that she worked at the police department, Wednesday through Saturday, from 4pm to 2am the hardest part about that job was being alone. So this job was definitely a break to her. -Did you ever take an internship? If so, how did that affect your decision and views on this career? She said she did, but she only took internships that had nothing to do with what she already knew she wanted to do. My interview experience 1. I will be helping others and hearing them out, and do my best to find them a solution for them to either choose to take or not. 2. I might save someones live. 3. I can help individuals or families with issues and hope they will change for their best. There is an estimated 15% growth but it will vary by specialization. -Has this career ever brought you an emotional toll towards a client/patient and was it tough to recover from it? Yes, and she said she has not met a social worker who has not ever gotten emotionally driven, she says its the human thing to do. Except you just have to leave it all behind the door, and not get to involved. The hardest part of it to her is working with kids, because so much goes on in our lives and shes not our mother, and she cant stop us from our mistakes because that is what makes us better. -Have you ever had trouble recovering from a decision in this field? Or have a feeling that you did not do enough? Yes, she explained to us an experience of her being in court, and realizing she was wrong, that she did not know what was best. -Is it hard to stay closed in with what is said to you? Or what your day at work has been like? She told us yes, but its all confidential, and that she can´t speak of it, it is our personal business.
