Roadmap Presentation
Transcript: Ellie's CCPA Roadmap Personality Type Ethics Takeaways This class changed my perspective on CCPA. Upon arrival at SMU, I was very skeptical of the communications field and adament that I would not be able to be successful within the field. I was sorely mistaken. CCPA 1301 has expanded my entire view and knowledge of the field as there are a plethora of job opportunities that I was unaware of. I was not only exposed to the sheer amount of job opportunities, but the fact that they span across every job sector. Initially, I was unaware that communications degrees are utilized in every sector of society and how applicable it is to daily life. Thorugh this class I was able to learn about different opportunities, but also different fields and skills that are utilized in different markets. I am really grateful to have taken this class. If I were to make one suggestion, I would vouch for an increase in group work and projects as a large portion of the field involves working with others to complete tasks. I think this would be beneficial to students as they would be able to practice communicating and working with others in a low-stake environment. On the other hand, I really enjoyed hearing from professors that teach in different areas of the communications department here at SMU. Ethics are a fundamental component to journalism, yet they are sometimes disregarded. Ethics is abiding by a set of rules that are implemented to ensure there is regulation and appropriate steps taken by an organization to keep them in good standing. However, morality is different in that it is one's personal ability to do what is right for themselves, but also for others. This can mean obeying a code of ethics for a particular organization, or not because it goes against your personal beliefs. Different news organizations have different standards, however they are all very similar. The Society of Professional Journalists has developed a Code of Ethics that encompasses the ideals of every news outlet. Four key components include the idea of being truthful, minimizing harm, acting independently, and being transparent. These are crucial to the success of any journalist, despite the organization to which they belong.A recent issue revolving around ethical journalism involves Kobe Bryant and TMZ. Following Bryant's tragic helicopter death, TMZ was the first outlet to report the news, before the police had an understanding of what had transpired. While this event was not necessarily private as it was a crash that occurred in public, TMZ failed in that they reported an indident without thinking about the harm that could be done to close family and friends, as well as being fully truthful in the matter as it was not clear what had happened at the time. Journalists are constantly in a race to be the first, but it is important that we follow the guidelines implemented so that harm is minimized and the whole truth can be shared. While I was always aware that I had a strong, assertive personality, through work in DWYA, I was able to confirm that I was an ENTJ, or extraverted, intuitive, thinking, and judging type. This type is also referred to as "The Commander". In order to be my most successful self, I will need to work in an environment in which I am able to lead people and make decisions, but also am able to have control over tasks. My reading from DWYA confirmed that I need organization in my life, but I think I differ in the fact that I would like to work in an easy-going environment that is not incredibly rigid. This is where I deviate the most from the typical ENTJ because they typically like controlled settings where everything is done in a systematic way. While I do succeed with organization, I do best when I am able to interact and collaborate with others. New York City My entire life I have had difficulty focusing, which has oftentimes led to procrastination on completing assignments, working out, or completing simple tasks around the house. As I get older I realize the importance of setting goals and accomplishing them, or else I cannot move forward. One goal of mine has been to live in Manhattan, but this cannot happen unless I focus, earn good grades, and am able to afford this lifestyle that I have dreamed about since childhood. I also found it interesting that ENTJ is one of the most common personality types to live in New York City. COMM & COVID-19 During the Coronavirus pandemic, we experienced new ways of communicating on a global level, but also a personal level. These communications efforts continue into today as we have not reached a complete sense of normalcy yet. After experiencing this and relying so heavily on our news outlets and government officials to provide us with information, I think we also realized the importance of clear, effective communication. The information that we are now learning about pertains to the vaccine booster shots. There has been information given from both the FDA and CDC, but they do not align.
