Country Of Origin Labeling Laws (C.O.O.L) Why amending COOL laws is important -No major studies have been done that directly study how it impacts consumers due to lack of interest and publicity -The only government funded studies that have been done study the effects on agriculture business and corporations -It is important to determine how much consumers care about their meat labeling to push for COOL to be re amended and put back in action STATES: In order to receive a U.S. country-of-origin label, a livestock product must be derived from an animal that was exclusively born, raised, and processed in the United States -Recently have been silently amended by Congress due to a hefty increase in fines and tariffs from foreign countries who are suffering monetarily from COOL. -Passed with minimal to no publicity, in a quick vote purposefully hidden from consumers in order to support corporations Cow was slaughtered in Mexico Why is proper labeling necessary? What else is impacted by COOL laws? Cow was slaughtered in Kansas, USA (Raise your hand if yes) (also raise your hand if no, I'm trying to prove a point here) These two meats were both purchased from the same store and have identical FDA approved labeling, they are sold for the same price and look to be similar quality... THE END Cow was processed in Kansas, USA Sarah Saber ENG302-M06 Cow was sent to Canada for processing -Those who need halal meats due to religious purposes will not have properly labeled food -Other countries have different standards for processing and slaughtering meat -Consumers have a preference to purchase American made meat due to freshness and transparency -Other countries may use chemical preservatives in their processing which are banned in the USA Why it is important to study the impacts of COOL Beef is sold in USA labeled as "Made in USA" (Raise your hand if yes) ...pork... A consumer has a right to know what they are eating. This directly affects all of our population, our families and pets. It is important to know where your food is being sourced for dietary, religious & hygienic standards. Government transparency is important for consumers. HOWEVER... What is the problem?
