Introduction Who Am I? “We should emphasize not Negro History, but the Negro in history. What we need is not a history of selected races or nations, but the history of the world void of national bias, race hate, and religious prejudice.” Dr. Carter G. Woodson (“Father of Black History”) on the founding Negro History Week, 1926 Historian and educator Carter G. Woodson originally founded “Negro History Week” in 1926 Created during a time when most history books did not acknowledge any African-American history or the important role African-Americans played in the creation of America Woodson established the Association for the Study of Negro Life and History in an attempt to write Blacks into the History books Woodson chose February because it was the birth month of Abraham Lincoln (Feb 12) and Frederick Douglass (Feb 14); both of whom fought for freedom of American slaves In 1976, Negro History Week was extended a month also known as African American Heritage Month Who was the Founder of Black History Month?
