Transcript: By: Sean Palmer Roads Now and Then the roads in industrial revolution roads where often just dirt roads not very well maintained or the more fancier option was macadam which was a process used to make gravel roads Roads then Roads then A roads main use back then was for horses and for people to walk on. Transcript: The Road Summary The Road written by Cormac McCarthy is an Post-Apocalyptic fictional novel. The Road is about a man and a boy who are on a journey to go south coast where it is warmer. The man and the boy struggle to stay alive when on the journey. The boy and the man try to find food, clothing and anyone or anything that will help them try to survive. Characters The man (father) The main character of the book Father of the son The father does everything in his ability to save the boy and keep him alive The man gives the boy unconditional love throughout everthing that is happening to them "I will kill anyone who touches you. Do you understand?" (McCarthy 77). This quote shows how the father's devotion to his son has no boundaries. The Boy The boy is very kind-hearted young boy who looks up to his father He is very open minded The boy wants to help people they come across during their journey The boy motivates himself and his father to try to survive Setting For majority of the book the setting mostly takes place on the road, which is the easiest way to travel. The man and the boy do stop and sleep in the woods too. While travelling on the road they stop and find places where they could get supplies to survive, ex: the bunker. This book is also taken place in an apocalypse world. Plot The plot of “The Road” consists of lots of ups and downs. Throughout the story the man and the boys situation is always hard. They never gain much so they have nothing to lose. The thing they gain the most is land. There is a repetitive plot throughout the book, the man and the boy find some food, then they are starving, then they come across more supplies, then they are starving again. It is a constant turn from having a good situation to a bad one. Every decision they make is in fear of staying alive. For example, they came across an un explored bunker with loads of food in it, they stayed there for a few days then left because they were afraid people knew they were in there. The man and they boy grow throughout the story, the man grows sicker and the boy grows tougher and matures. By the time the man dies the boy finds a new group to travel with and he is ready to go on without the man. Theme Like Father, Like Son: Conflict, Negotiation and Shared Fate In The Road, the father and son must negotiate many decisions. They are two individuals with separate expectations, but their paths and their fates are inseparable. Every conflict that they face, they resolve and fix together A son is a mans best freind so nothing can come between the man and the boy. ”When he woke in the woods in the dark and the cold of the night he'd reach out to touch the child sleeping beside him.” - This shows the relationship the man and the boy have, it shows that during these difficult times they rely on each other to be safe, and will have each other’s backs no matter the circumstance. “The city was mostly burned. No sign of life. Cars in the streets caked with ash, everything covered with ash and dust. Fossil tracks in the dried sludge. A corpse in a doorway dried to leather. Grimacing at the day. He pulled the boy closer. Just remember that the things you put into your head are there forever, he said. You might want to think about that.” - This quote tells the audience that as terrible as the circumstances are, the man is still trying to get the boy’s mind off all the bad things surrounding him. In a moment like this, walking through an abandoned city can be very frightening not just for a boy but a man as well. The man gives the boy enlightment by telling him that the things he puts in his head will always be there. Against all good sense, The Boy wants to help everyone they meet on the road. The Man knows they need to keep moving and conserve supplies if they want to survive. We think, though, that The Boy's compassionate gestures contribute something just as important to the survival of their little band: he keeps them human. “He frailty of everything revealed at last. Old and troubling issues resolved into nothingness and night. The last instance of a thing takes the class with it. “ - This is what he means by the phrase "the last instance of a thing takes the class with it." As people dwindle and become isolated, there's the risk that no one will be left at all. Then, even the idea of humans will have disappeared. Quotes Conflicts with the boy Conflicts faced by the boy. In the story the man and the boy are forced to overcome many obstacles both mentally and physically. The boy is constantly trying to convince himself that they are the good guys and they are “Carrying on the fire”, however the actions done by the man make him second guess if they indeed are the good guys. Most the time it was clear that the boy did not agree with the man, now that the man has died the boy is able to make his own choices and handle situations the way he sees fit.
