The audience of our magazine, as it's title suggests, includes different people: -According to Huffington Post, as of 2009, 43.6 million readers. -Young women who are interested in pop culture, want to read about popular movies, tv shows, books, music, and latest exclusive interviews, and want a magazine with more of a "gossipy" writing style -Middle aged adults looking to keep up to date on current events, but want to read about it in a lighter setting -Teenagers interested in celebrity news and fashion, recipes, music, and upcoming books -Middle Aged Women who want to know the latest trends and pop culture, while still getting to read about current events -people simply looking for the latest updates in entertainment All these age groups and interests find something intriguing about the information presented. How do we know?-The Ads featured in the magazine have a small variety, which is a clear sign as to who is reading PEOPLE. -Ads such as "Covergirl Lashblast Mascara," "JEnny Craig Wieght loss systems," L'oreal Revitalift Wrinkle remover, "Coach" perfume samples, and Neutrogena skin care products are featured in almost every issue. These ads can target both young and old audiences. Even mens perfume samples are included, hinting that PEOPLE magazine really can appeal to everyone. -We also determined People's audience by looking at the types of articles in each issue. There are always at least 3 celebrity articles (interviews, inside scoops, etc.), a current event article, a fashion section, human interest stories, a featured "Heroes Among us" and a movies, tv, music, and books. These are all specifically geared towards the audience that people generally attracts. So we mimicked these styles in our own articles and made a human interest story as well as a celebrity piece to show the magazines breath. Some articles: What did we notice about Style/Voice/Tone in PEOPLE? -Due to PEOPLE magazine's large variety of articles, the tone of the magazine remains informative, quippy, and direct. The lighter articles are located in the beginning of the magazine. -The Scoop section is an example of this. It contains brief semi-humorous headlines, with commonly used language depicting the latest celeb gossip. the style writing used here is colloquial, and as if the writing was discussed around peers. This style, one of many, we mimicked for our article which entailed Lindsay Winehouse. -We used a lighter tone for the article, even though rehab and DUI's are no laughing matter. We tried to embody the idea that people want to hear ridiculous celebrity gossip, not a depressing story about a well-liked hollywood star. -We noticed that PEOPLE's style of writing is short, simply worded articles that deliver information in an easy to read way. This is what we tried to achieve in both articles. The topics PEOPLE covers require little background knowledge to understand, which means everyone can enjoy them. -An example of the way PEOPLE uses style, tone, and voice is in their celebrity interviews. The interviews are informally conducted (Maya Rudolph was interviewed over chicken and waffles) and include humorous questions that bring readers some "real life" celebrity scoop. The interviews include questions about favorite foods, most embarrassing moments, and first crushes. This fun, yet rather useless information, makes reading PEOPLE an amusing experience. Sources are also an important part of PEOPLE's style and tone. Sources within articles are vaguely cited, even though the content is informative and factual, the excessive quotations within each article, allows the audience to accept its validity. In more serious articles, like a story about the presidents, a source like Michelle Obama might be used and directly quoted. The sources in people indicate who is reading which sections, and what they expect to hear. Sources play as big a role in style and tone as the actual information and quotes do. Various Covers Style, tone, and voice are all present even on the cover of the magazine. The headlines in bold sometimes have alliteration, or words like "untold", "secret" or "exclusive" which entice readers. Images of the most well known people that are featured in the magazine are also placed on the cover. -Due to PEOPLE magazine's large variety of articles, the tone of the magazine remains informative, quippy, and direct.
