E What are Graphic Organziers? "Graphic organizers guide learners’ thinking as they fill in and build upon a visual map or diagram. Graphic organizers are some of the most effective visual learning strategies for students and are applied across the curriculum to enhance learning and understanding of subject matter content ("Teaching and learning with graphic organizer," 2017)." C How are Graphic Organizers Used? Graphic organizers are a wonderful tool that can support students as they organize their thoughts, create a writing plan, use to support understanding of text, as well as vocabulary acquisition. A Now Let's Explore! Word Recognition "To help children map the relations between letters and sounds, effective phonics and word-recognition strategy instruction should provide them with opportunities to become comfortable with a number of aspects of reading, including alphabetic knowledge, phonemic awareness, sound-symbol relations, word-identification strategies, spelling and writing connections, related reading practice, and reading fluency (Chard & Osborn, n.d.)." Word Recognition Word Recognition Strategies... Word Work (Spence, n.d.) Tree Map Circle Map Language Comprehension Vocabulary The student can determine the meaning of a word or phrase by thinking how it is used and describe the word in multple ways (Reading Educator, n.d.). Language Comprehension Definition The natural home or environment of an animal, plant, or other organism. Example forest Word habitat Sentence The brown bear lives in its natural habitat in the forest. Illustration The Frayer Model This activity can also be used to apply synonyms, antonyms, or parts of speech. Strategic Knowledge Settinng the purpose or goal of reading a variety of text! Reading and Writing Connections Across Content Areas Reading and writing can be connected in all content areas (Hyerle, Alper, & Wolfe, 2011). This tool is a great visual for students to apply their knowledge, or use as a reference. Using a graphic organizer can support students to transfer information for short term memory to long term memory. Thank you for participating! References Chard, D. J., & Osburn, J.
