Transcript: Research Papers Choose a career It must be researchable in our library. You will submit your topics to me for approval. No more than 2 people per class may choose the same career. You will not be able to change your topic after the due date. Step 2: Get your supplies You need the following: 4x6 Notecards (at least 100, they must be ruled, don’t get spiral bound) Blue or Black ink pens Rubber bands Ziplock bag (must be quart or gallon size—do not use a sandwich size) Good attitude and good organizational skills Step 3: begin your research You will write 2 different types of cards while researching. Source Cards and Note Cards Now you try. Get out your text book, and create a sample source card for your text book. No call number will be listed. Use Kathleen Daniel as the author (she is the editor in chief) Daniel, Kathleen. Elements of Literature: Sixth Course. Austin: Hold, Rinehart, and Winston, 2000. (no call # listed) Yes, this is a lot of information, but be sure to get it all down on your source card. Once you have your information, use www.bibme.com or www.citationmachine.net to create MLA format for your works cited page. Notecards Each notecard will contain about 1 sentence of information from the soure that you have PUT INTO YOUR OWN WORDS. Notecard format Source # OR shortened version of title Subject Heading (AKA Sub Topic) Note—ONE sentence in your own words. Nothing should be copied directly from the source. Pg. # Step 4: Compose a Thesis, and begin your outline and rough draft Thesis? 1. One sentence that is the main or controlling idea of the whole paper 2. You should mention the topic in the thesis 3. You should mention your main points in the thesis For example Thesis: A career as an archaeologist requires intense study and the ability to withstand harsh conditions, but it is a tremendously satisfying job that is never boring. Becoming an optometrist is not easy, but if you are intelligent, hardworking, and compassionate, you can achieve this rewarding career. Your rough draft should reflect the writing process and paragraph writing style that we have already discussed. Your rough draft MUST include... You must cite all research, EVEN IF IT IS IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Just enough information is given to refer the reader to the source in the works cited page at the end of the paper Usually this information is the author’s last name and the page from which it was taken (Smith 22) Notice there is no "p" for page. When there is no author given you put a shortened form of the title in parenthesis (“Navaho Claims” 84) All information written in parenthesis must use proper punctuation. Italics/Underlining is used for titles of novels, films, full works, and complete titles of websites. Quotation Marks are used for article titles, smaller works, or articles posted on websites. Step 1: Organize your Notecards Step 4 Using your notecard piles, begin writing the rough draft using MLA format and parenthetical citations Step 5: Prepare and turn in your final Draft Your final draft must include: Title page Thesis/Outline Page Final Paper Bibliography/Works Cited Rough Draft All notecards and Source Cards If any part of your paper is missing, it will be a 25 point deduction regardless of the page. If your rough draft is missing, it will be a 50 point deduction. In the Library 1. NO TALKING—unless you are talking to me or to Mrs. Parnell. If you have a question, stay in your seat and raise your hand. I will call you to my station as soon as possible. I may be helping others and you may have to wait. If so, be patient and try to work on something that you can do by yourself. Don’t waste time. 2. Do not put your head down at any time EVER Everyone must be occupied at all times. You must have a book, magazine, or papers in front of you at all times. 4. Computer rules: a. You must sign in on the log sheet b. You must pay $.10 per page to print. You must pay Mrs. Parnell. Bring a handful of change if you plan on printing. c. You may bring a flash drive from home to save your research so you can print or take notes at home d. You may NOT use the computer for anything else except research for your topic. If I catch you on any site other than for your research, you’ll get an immediate referral and have points deducted from your paper 5. If you are out of class for any reason during the days set aside
