Transcript: Elementary Teachers and departmentalized instruction Mackenzie Draine Purpose of study Purpose of study Problem schools must explore methods to improve instructional mehtods to meet demands of state and federal standards Purpose The purpose of this study was to experiment with elementary school teachers to inform their decision about whole-school departmentalization for the future Research questions Research questions Will a teacher's workload be significantly increased or decreased with departmentalized instruction? Will teaching methods and instructional time be positively or negatively impacted? How is the interaction with students and parents effected by departmentalized instruction? do teachers gain collaboration skills with colleagues? Qualitative Design Qualitative Design Through this experiment, researchers were involved with one on one interaction with teachers and allowed them to provide feedback throughout the experiment. Multiple research methods were used throughout the study to gather information and form the conclusion. This qualitative research was appropriate because it allowed the subject to provide personal views and opinion throughout the study and the study was completed over an extended period of time. This particular case is considered a single, embedded case study. While there was only one study and one organization used, there were more than one analysis provided at the end of the study. If there was only one analysis, it would be considered a single. holistic study. SIngle or Multiple Case SIngle or Multiple Case Multiple forms of data collection were used throughout the research over the duration of one academic school year: Focus Group interviews Individual Interviews Teacher Journals Questionnaires Observations Data Collection Data Collection Both saturation and triangulation are apparent in this case study. To represent triangulation, multiple methods of research were used to gather information. Interviews, questionaires, and observations were used. With the information ptovided by the subjects, saturation was met in the means that all possible information was attained through this study. SAturation and Triangulation SAturation and Triangulation Challenges of Study Challenges of Study Although this study provides adequate feedback, it does now go wihtout its limitations. The first limitation is that only one school is represented in this study. While the school is representing its school district, there are more schools in the school district, state, and nation. While all teachers in the school participated, only three grade levels were tested: first, second, and third grade One challenge for the teachers is that they were onlu able to collaborate with the teachers in their school instead of all grade level teachers in their district No ethical issues were identified during this study. All subjects were communicative about the process and researchers were very interaactive with the process and the participants. Ethical Issues Ethical Issues Overall Assessment Overall Assessment The qualitative approach used in this study was effective and provided researchers with a clear conclusion. Ultimately, the research found that deprtmentalized instruction deacreased teacher workload, lowered teacher stress level, and improved attitudes towards teaching. With the amount of participants and duration of the study, enough infomration was provided to determine departmentalized instruction was beneficial for that school.
