They keep a careful watch on patients to make sure they are using their prescriptions properly. They also instruct doctors on the side effects, dosages, selection, and interactions of certain medications. They answer any questions the public may have on drugs. It usually consists of a 6 year course (2 years of previous college education followed by a 4 year Pharm.D. program). A normal retail pharmacist's routine would consist of at least an 8 hour shift. They will fill prescriptions called in by doctors and physicians, supply the public with the prescriptions they need to pick up, answer questions by the public or doctors about drug details, monitor patient medications, and work with insurance companies on paying for medications. Usually when people think of a pharmacist, they think of the normal over the counter person in a local pharmacy. But there are many different ways to pursue your pharmacy career.
