Solar Panel Proposal

Transcript: Solar Panel Proposal Presented by: Douglas Carpluk, Jessica Hudak, Kenn Nelson, Michael Krebs The proposal is a two step-process The Proposal First is the installation of the solar panels The second part is educating the students of Ohio State on Solar power Proposal Solar Panels Solar Panels Firstly, the panels will be insalled on Morrill Tower. They will be maintained by workers the first few years. We must ensure proper installation and that they are working properly. These will begin to save the school money. Education Education A class will be created to teach students about how solar panels work. The university will find a professor who meets there criteria and has worked woth solar panels. Following the fall semster after the students have been taught they will work on the panels. This will give students a great opurtuinty to start working in the field and will inform them about solar power. Project Goals There are three types of goals that would like to be met These goals are for both the solar panels and the educational aspect. These goals will need to be met to have a succesful project. Goals Short-Term Short-Term Goals First goal is to install the panels on Morrill Tower. Ensure proper insallation. Educate the students on how solar panels work and how they better society. Mid-Term Mid-Term Goals Low maintenance requirement. Cost savings. Give students technical skills. Pays for itself Energy use reduction Consume lower amounts of renewable resources. Create a more sustainable world. Prepare students with résumé builder and skills to work in the field Long -Term Goals Long-Term The Budget Budget The budget will have to focus on both aspects of the proposal. Total budget of $1,016,551.64. Both Direct and Indirect Costs Installation and Mainatanence Instalation and Maintenance Costs Costs Include the installation of the panels for a one time cost of $160,465.00. Also there will be 4 workers who will maintain the panels and they will be have to be pid in total $117,232.31 over the next three years. Moreover there is a maintance cost of $50,090.75 and energy cost of $18,729.60 over the three year span. All of these costs will be the direct costs of the panels while an extra 20 percent will be added on for the inderect cost of the panels. (inc. permits, etc.) Educational and other costs Educational and other Costs The professor for the class will cost about $316,655.10 over three years and their benefits will cost about $151,860.60 over three years. Lastly, there will be a legal cost of $32,093.00 in the first year. This covers the building permits, city approvals, and other minor administration costs incurred during project beginning. Total Budget Total Budget The solar panels for one building will cost between $132,930 and $188,400. This estimate is based off https://news.energysage.com/how-much-does-the-average-solar-panel-installation-cost-in-the-u-s/. Four workers will be hired to install the solar panels on a building on OSU campus. The salary for each of these workers were estimated with the median for construction workers in Columbus, according to www.payscale.com, and includes a 4% annual increase. These workers will work for 16 weeks, which is how long it will take to install the panels. A professor will be hired to teach a class about how to maintain solar panels, the financial advantages of solar panels, and the environmental benefits of solar panels. Salary for this professor position is based on the median for professors in the Columbus area (according to https://www.payscale.com/salary-calculator) and includes a 4% annual increase. Benefits for the professor is 35% of this given salary. The annual energy cost and maintenance costs were calculated from https://www.paradisesolarenergy.com/solar-services/commercial/ and includes a 4% increase for inflation. The legal costs for obtaining permits were estimated by taking 20% of these solar panel costs. Schedule Schedule Starting the process in April because less people are on the campus in the summer Logic Model Logic Model

Transcript: The Impact of Self-Grading on Middle School English Students’ Writing Skills Angelica Smith - University of Maryland Abstract Superficial teacher feedback on writing assignments combined with little to no student effort to reflect on any feedback keeps students from the opportunity to refine essential metacognitive skills. Previous research indicates that self-grading is an effective strategy for students to practice metacognitive awareness. After 9 weeks of instruction incorporating either self-grading or providing traditional teacher feedback for reflection on writing assignments, gains of 85 seventh graders’ writing scores for organization will be analyzed to determine the extent to which the metacognitive experience of self-grading improves performance. Empirical evidence should help teachers ascertain whether the time-consuming practice of self-grading is valuable to student learning. Statement of Problem Peer- and Self-assessment are not as widely practiced as they could be because teachers' goals are to save as much time as possible and to ensure grade accuracy for all students. Logistical, pedagogical, and metacognitive benefits of peer- and self-assessment were contested and needed to be put to the test. Students don't reflect on teacher feedback on writing assignments and miss out on opportunities to refine metacognitive skills necessary for learning. Significance The proposed study contributes more knowledge about the benefits of self-assessment on student learning The proposed study helps teachers ascertain the value of incorporating self-assessment into their regular practice in improving performance, despite how much time is required for planning and preparation. Research Foundation The Impact of Self- and Peer-Grading on Student Learning Philip M. Sadler and Eddie Good After a Supreme Court decision in favor of peer-grading in classrooms, Sadler and Good decide to put benefits of self- and peer-grading to the test that are of teacher interest (p. 13) Participants included four middle school science classrooms Issues of interest: Student grades as substitute for teacher grades Student grading as a tool for student learning Results: High correlation between teacher and student grades Bias within student grading in self- and peer-assessment Self-assessment students made most gains in test scores Rationale for Proposed Study Test familiarity could have effected results Realistic assessment to determine student learning Research Questions / Hypotheses To what extent does the experience of self-assessment (training and process) impact students' writing organizational skills? Students who participate in self-assessment will improve their writing organizational skills significantly more than comparison students. Methods Participants 113 students in 4 sections of seventh grade English and their teacher No previous instruction on concept being taught during data collection Same age-range as students in original study / Studying different content Measure Scoring Guide for Writing - five or six traits writing rubric; traits include: Ideas & Content, Organization, Word Choice, (Voice,) Sentence Fluency, and Conventions; scores range from 1-lowest to 5-highest. The proposed study will target scores in Organziation. Different from measure in original study in that it is county-/teacher-designed, not student-designed, and assessess aspects of writing instead of science. Procedure All students receive instruction on the Well-Developed Paragraph (WDP) formula: a tool students are required to use to structure WDP's when writing literary analysis. 2 sections in control group (receive traditional teacher feedback on writing assessments); 2 sections in experimental group (trained and participate in self-assessment process) Of the four WDP's written to assess mastery of reading and writing skills, organization scores for first and fourth WDP will be collected. Data Analysis To what extent does the experience of self-assessment impact student's writing organizational skills? Descriptive statistics (means and standard deviations) are calculated in both groups for the first and fourth WDP. Gains from first to fourth WDP are calculated, and mean gains are found. t-test is conducted to determine the significance of the gains in both groups. Solar Panel Proposal

Transcript: Why should Our school install solar panels? OBJECTIVE Our objective We, the Universal School's middle school robotics team, Construction Crew, would like to eliminate the school's high electricity bills, and even let the electricity make money for our school if possible. We also want our school to become a zero-carbon facility to help take care of our air and planet. This goal is actually possible with an affordable and recent kind of technology we have all heard of, solar panels. RESEARCH Research The upfront cost is $294K, which is a lot to pay, but that is the only cost before the low cost of maintenance. Over 20 years, we will save 488K on electricity bills and earn 158K, so overall, it will be 646K saved. The payback period to get only the money we spent is estimated at around only 1.5 years. The size of the system is 154,660 watts, so the price per watt is $1.90. It will give more than enough energy to power the school's electricity (exactly 114% of what we need). And if we connect the solar panels to where we normally get our energy, the excess power will roll back into the system, sending funds to your account What we just listed is about the money it will save us, but it will not only save money, but will also be better for the environment. Over 20 years, it will stop 3,080 tons of CO2 from being released into the environment and will stop 314,393 gallons of gas from being burned. We, as an Islamic school, should be khulafa to the Earth and take care of it. Since building solar panels not only better for the Earth, but also better for us, we should definitely take action. TIME Time This is a pretty steep down payment, so it will obviously take some time to get the money back. This is an estimate of how long. How long will it actually take to have them installed? If we start soon, the solar panels will be fully installed at around January of 2020. How long will it take to get the money back? Surprisingly enough, even with such a deep down-payment as 294K, it will only take about 1.5 years to get the money back. How long will it take to start making money from it? After the 1.5 years that we are getting the money back, we will start earning money from the panels. Over 20 years, we will earn around $646,000. Masjid and othEr options Options We have Here is what the Masjid did and some other options for us. As we all know, the Masjid across the street has installed solar panels. When we contacted them, we realized that they used theirs only for heating water. Even though their total cost was about 25K, they got grants for most of it, only paying 7K out of their pockets. They were the first solar masjid in the nation, and they used that to their advantage. Companies wanted to invest in something that they thought would start a chain reaction. What The Masjid did Masjid There are several ways to fund a solar project: We can pay cash if we have it up-front, or we can pay zero up-front, and enter into what's called a Power Purchase Agreement (PPA). A PPA would mean an investor pays for the installation and maintenance of the system, and the school would pay for the power that the Solar PV system generates. The power from the solar would come at a fraction of the cost that the school currently pays for electricity, resulting in a significant reduction in overall utility expenditure on the school's behalf.
