Transcript: Osteoarthritis Done by: Irving Sanchez What is "Osteoarthritis"? The most common form of arthritis. Usually occurs after middle age. It is the wear and tear, type of arthritis. a firm, elastic, flexible type of connective tissue of a translucent whitish or yellowish color; gristle. The Pain... Through time cartilage between any joint can wear out and as a result the bones rub against each other, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness. Luckily, Osteoarthritis only affects the joint, where as rheumatoid arthritis and other forms, can affect organs. Diagnosing Osteoarthritis The simplest way to diagnose Osteoarthritis is an X-Ray, to check loss of cartilage. Arthrocentesis: Performed in the doctor's office. Joint fluid is used for analysis. Arthroscopy: Surgical technique, which inserts a viewing tube, to examine the joint space. Treatment for Osteoarthritis has two main goals. To make the joints as least painful as possible. And to maintain joint function. Treatment is very simple. Rest, exercise, diet control with weight reduction, physical and occupational therapy. And for the more severe cases, aspirin and acetaminophen.
