What is the Order of the Arrow

Transcript: The Order of The Arrow ! What's that? Presented by: Chris Mercer 2013 Tau Chapter Chief Purpose of this Presentation : My Goal is by the end of this presentation YOU will have information on what the Order of the Arrow is and how it can help scouts grow in their scouting experience. Our Mission Statement ! The Mission of the Order of the Arrow is to fulfill its purpose as an integral part of the Boy Scouts of America through positive Leadership under the guidance of selected capable adults. The Order of the Arrow is A YOUTH RUN ORGANIZATION !!!!! The The Order of the Arrow was founded in 1915 by Dr. E . Urner Goodman and Co founded by Carol A Edson On Treasure Island at Philadelphia Council Scout Camp. The Order of the Arrow was Founded to serve a useful purpose: to cause the Scout Oath an Law to spring into action in all parts of the nation. In the year 2013 the Order of the Arrow is still dedicated to this high purpose. It was created to recognize those scouts who best exemplified the scout oath and law in their daily lives. The order also provides scouts with life changing opportunities that are not avable in all scout troops . The Order of the Arrow is scouting's National Honor Society Honoring the scouts for their scholarship, leadership, service and character. One of the Orders GREATEST achievements is, and will continue to be The Strengthrning of the scouting movement as an Outdoor Experence. "The Order of the Arrow is a 'thing of the spirit' rather than of mechanics. Organization, operational procedure, and paraphernalia are necessary in any large and growing movement, but they are not what count in the end. The things of the spirit count: Brotherhood, in a day when there is too much hatred at home and abroad; Cheerfulness, in a day when the pessimists have the floor; Service, in a day when millions are interested only in getting or grasping rather than giving." -Dr.E Urner Goodman What are the Requirments for a scout to get nominated into the Order of the Arrow?? There are a Few requirments that MUST be complete before a scout can be NOMINATED into the order. First: The Scout MUST be a Reistered member of the Boy Scouts of America. Second: A scout MUST have at least 15 days and nights of Boy Scout Camping during the two years prior to election. The 15 days and nights must include one, but no more than one long term camp consisting of 6 consectuive days and 5 nights of resident camping, approved by the BSA ( summer Camp) Third: The youth must be under the age of 21, and hold at least the BSA first class Rank. Finally: The scout MUST have the Approval of the SCOUTMASTER :) An Arrowman's primary responsiblity is to his TROOP! Because it was your fellow troop members who elected them. Okay , We now know what the History is and the requirements for a nomination into the order of the arrow , But what can scouts learn after being nominated? Scouts in the OA can learn ... LEADERSHIP!! Scouts that enter the OA have a better opportunity to learn leadership skills and use the skills they have learned in different situations. Scouts that get elected into to OA are given the opportunity to lead in their Troop, Chapter, and Lodge. Sometimes scouts even take it even further to lead the section , regonal or national Level of the Order of the Arrow! Scouts can also learn.... Social Skills !!!! Like .... Public Speaking!!!! Being in a leadership position in the troop , chapter , or lodge, leads to speaking to large numbers of other scouts. Some of these leadership opportunities can lead to extremely exciting and fun events such as ..... All of these events give scouts opportunities to rise to challenges and goals set by them.Even if these goals or challenges are not achieved the scouts have learned something useful during the process. Scouts also Learn SERVICE TO OTHERS ! (Service, in a day when millions are interested only in getting or grasping rather than giving.) Dr.Goodman. Scouts particapate in servive Projects at camps like at Boddie, Charles, Bonner North these projects consist of tent raising for summer camp , making trails safer for campers ect. These projects teach scouts to give instead of get. Any Questions that you have I would be happy to answer them for you ! :D Thank You for your time and Listening:)
