Mining Engineering

Transcript: Mining and the Environment Computers are very useful to mining engineers, they're used in various applications throughout the process of mining. Such as; Probing and analysing underground for materials Exploration Environmental and sustainability Refining processes Technologies in mining that could be improved Technology mining engineers need to use More sophisticated probing techniques to expand overall exploration of minerals Use computer based programs to refine minerals from waste. Using infra-red tech. to identify miners in a mine (safety concern). Using enviro-friendly transportation for transporting minerals to their destinations. Nell Foley What do mining engineers do? Technologies and Processes in Mining Mineral extraction is essential to modern society. Mining activities by their nature cause a disturbance of the environment in and around which the minerals are located. Mining engineers must therefore be concerned not only with the production and processing of mineral commodities, but also with the mitigation of damage to the environment as a result of that production and processing. [2] Mining and Safety Mining engineers are concerned with the safe, economic and environmentally responsible recovery and processing of mineral resources to meet the ever-expanding global demand.[1] Computers in Mining Key concerns are; Ventilation, to minimise exposure to dust, heat and harmful gases, Rock falls and collapses. Half of mining fatalities are due to cave ins and unstability in mines, Hazard identification and reduction, Regulation and implementation of safety protocol and procedures Ensuring that miners are able to access communication and safety equipment during emergencys Computer aided design (CAD). Mining would take data to analyse certain information. Communication programs to aid miners and to increase overall safety at the mine site. During exploration, the use of computers to plot the underground strains of materials is beneficial. It is the job of a mining engineer to ensure that the project that they are involved with is safe in all aspects of exploration, development, transportation and refinery in the mining industry. Transcript: To be a Mining Engineer I need to gain degree in mining engineering from an acredited university. I need to have an interest in natural resources, maths and science, an understanding of the effects of Mining on the surrounding environment, technical knowledge, problem solving, communication and management skills. Another pathway to an engineeng degree is to seccessfully apply for an internship at a mine.In This way you can gain practical experience while studying. Mining Engineers should be prepared to work in outdoor conditions, at times in locations remote from major cities. Mining engineers will be working with outdoor and underground elements, which can be physically demanding. Being fit and healthy will decrease the stress that is put on your body by working in all kinds of weather conditions. What is the difference between open cut and underground mine? How do Geology and Mining Engineering Mix? Can anyone in the audience give me a definition? ANY RESPONSES? This is what I have found out about mining engineering it's about planning, safety, design, operation, management and sustainability of mines. You have to evaluate, plan and oversee the construction of a mine from start to finish. Gold mining How can I melt gold at home? Geological engineering comprises a number of engineering specialities such as geotechnical engineering, groundwater hydrology and engineering geology. Responsibilities of the role typically include ensuring geotechnical activities are conducted safely in order to provide a safe working environment for employees and contractors in fitting with company standards and government legislation. Mining Engineering Biggest gold mine in Australia. Gold miner Newcrest is set to build what it says is the largest underground mine in Australia, after approving the development of the Cadia East gold and copper deposits near Orange in Central Western NSW. Newcrest said Cadia East gold deposits was one of the largest in Australia. Comprising a mineral resource of 2,347 million tonnes, containing 3.32 million ounces of gold and 6.59 million tonnes of copper. Case study 1. What Is Mining Engineering? This is one type of mining I have researched this term. The symbol for GOLD is Au. There are many different types of gold bearing minerals and many ways to mine gold. Drilling for gold-many tonnes of rock have to be mined and processed till you see gold . Gold mines are very large and need many people to work. Also huge equipment is used to transport the rock for refining. Geologists study the rocks and make maps to establish the gold deposits.. They drill bores in the ground to collect samples. After the rocks are blasted huge hydraulic shovels and trucks are used to collect the rocks. The gold is all different grades, and has to go through many processes to extract pure gold. You can mine for gold, coal and mineral deposits. There can be open cut mines, undergound mines, dredging, hard rock mining, drift mining, shaft mining, bore hole mining and slope mining. Bibliography Based in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia, The Super Pit produces up to 850,000 ounces of gold a year and its operation far outweighs any other mining centre in Australia. The Super Pit is the biggest mine in the country. the Super Pit is managed by Kalgoorlie Consolidated Gold Mines (KCGM) and owned (50/50) by Newmont Australia Pty Ltd. and Barrick Pacific. The tasks can include: *Investigating the mineral deposits with geologists to determine if it can be profitable. *Together they look at the characteristics of the mineral deposits to decide the best mine methods. *Carry out the mine design. *Plan for employment of staff and equipment. *Plan for infrastructure such as access roads, water and power supplies. *Oversee the mine construction. *Take on leadership responsibitities. *Conduct on-going research. My name is Dylan Grogan. I would like to welcome you to my term 1 exhibition. I am pleased to present the following research on MINING ENGINEERING that I have studied this term. I hope by the end of my exhibition you will have some of the knowledge of mining engineering that I have gained through my studies. Skills I need to be a Mining Engineer. Step 1 * To melt gold you get your gold material. Make sure you're working with real gold. Step 2* Since gold melts at almost 2000 degrees you need a container that won''t melt before the gold does. If you don't have a crucible, you can purchase one online for $10. Put the crucible in a fireproof area. Step 3* Sprinkle a little boric acid powder, for better results and higher gold yield, purchase MB formula (MB formula.com) until it starts to melt. Add another sprinkle of boric acid and continue until the gold is completely liquid. step4* Carefully pore the molten gold into ingot gold mould or another shape. Step5* Wait for the gold piece to cool completely before handling. Then you have a gold block. What Does A Mining Engineer Do? This is a video of a mine mining for gold. Different types
