Department stores * The Bon Marche in Paris was the first department store opening in 1852 * It was a whole new experience of shopping giving the public the “freedom to browse, meaning the liberty to indulge in dreams without being obligated to buy” * People were introduced to the ability of having the freedom to look at products from different outlets by themselves instead of someone showcasing it to them. The electric Fairyland * The Progress of the nineteenth century technology was changing the social universe towards the way people shopped and went about their daily lives. * Lighting displayed in cities was starting to become more presentable in front of stores and on streets. * The purpose of the effect that lighting had amongst the public was considered to be the dream world of consumption and to engage people towards places. When the Great Depression began, citizens were slowly starting to not be able to enjoy their leisure time anymore and had to focus their attention on cheaper forms of entertainment such as the radio (Fowles 181). #StarSystem Early Motion Pictures Between the years of 1870-1920 the fascination with entertainers began to rapidly increase (Fowles 176) #StarSystem Phonograph Movie talks Continued • Sound in films was not accepted until the 30s because people were so used to the silent film stories, and they liked how they can use their imagination towards what the story was about. • Silent pictures seemed more complete then early talkies because the director can give instructions while the silent film was being produced since there was no sound • It was all up to the actors to now create their own emotions and feelings during the film, in which they can now show their talent through sound. • Celebrities were created through sound and people started idolizing them more since they were showing their true talents. Example: The sinking of the titanic was inaccessible and unforeseeable. An anonymous amateur photographer was at hand on one of the rescue ships and snapped a shot.
