Transcript: Law Enforcement: Does Society Really Need them? By Harry Vu The Sole purpose of Law Enforcement The Sole purpose of Law Enforcement The sole purpose of law enforcement is to protect citizens from harm, enforce the law, keep criminals from harming the public, and keep the region they are in charge of safe for all citizens. Keeping Order in Society Society can be a dangerous place for any person in public; there are a good amount of criminals waiting to attack any unsuspecting citizen. This is where police come in. They are the guards of society. From traffic violations to murders and terror attacks, police are always risking their lives and going out in the world to try and make it as safe as possible. They are willing to make the ultimate sacrafice for their society. They are our protectors and should always be helped for their service to us and risking their own lives every single day. Keeping Order in Society How police treat people Police usually treat people with integrity, fairness, and courage. This is an event that would occur for the majority of the time. However, there are such cases that police needlessly harmed citizens; this is called police brutality. Many groups can be especially vulernable to police brutality, which include the mentally ill, disabled (blind, deaf, etc.). Not only that, but peole can also be harmed by officers of a different race! The communication barriers are usually to blame for the deaths of these people when they confront the police. In conclusion, police treat people fairly most of the time, but there are times that they have harmed or killed someone with unnecessary use of force. How police treat people As mentioned, there are minority groups who are at a raised risk of being a victim of police brutality. Mentally ill Disabled Minority races Major movements, including: political social Federalism Separation of powers Trouble for minority groups Society from the Perspective of the Police Society from the Perspective of the Police The police, however, have a different vantage point in society than the citizens they protect. From what they see, they are supposed to serve and protect the citizens of their region with integrity, justice, and honesty. Every day, they go out in their community risking their lives and serving their community. They deserve the praise and the respect from the people that they serve every day. Police also know that they do occasionally cross the line and attack people in a way that society would think that is wrong. However, especially after several attacks by terrorists and extremism, police need to step up their security and act in the best protective way possible. After all, the goal of the police is to keep society safe while also hurting as little people as possible. The Police Impact on Society The police, once again, go out in society to make the society safer for civilians. They are the ones who keep the crime rate low and controllable, as well as preventing crime. Police are also able to help civilians in need, such as participating in rescue efforts after any disasters or accidents. They can also perform investigations when necessary. However, a small number of officers once in a blue moon cross the line and abuse their privilege against certain suspects, such as using abusive and overreactive strategies to arrest their wanted person, which is called police brutality. In addition, discrimination by police can cause civil disruption and often can result in riots. The Police Impact on Society
