Labor Day

Transcript: Labor Day How it Came to Be Labor Day started in 1882, when it was first celebrated on Tuesday, the 5th of September. No one is sure who started it. Some say it was Peter McGuire, general secretary of the Brotherhood of Carpenters and Joiners. Others say it is Matthew Maguire, and recent research seems to support this idea. What is clear, however, is that the idea was adopted and a committee was appointed to plan a demonstration and a picnic. The celebration of the holiday was outlined in the first proposal of the holiday. They included: A street parade followed by a festival Speeches by prominent men and women Even later, the Sunday after was adopted as Labor Sunday http://www.dol.gov/opa/aboutdol/laborday.htm The Central Labor Union, after celebrating the holiday first, held it again a year later. The first government recognitions came through municipal ordinances passed during 1885 and 1886. By 1894, 31 states had adopted the holiday in honor of workers. On June 28th of 1894 (that same year) Congress passed an act making the first Monday in September of each year a legal holiday and the territories. Why do we Celebrate it? We celebrate Labor Day to celebrate the accomplishments of the American worker How it Became a Holiday Who it's For The holiday is dedicated to the social and economic achievements of someone that is all over America... the American worker. The prominent men and women who give the speeches are, most often, prominent American workers. That's why Americans celebrate Labor Day. How is it Celebrated Source Citing

Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.
