Transcript: The Korean War (1950-53) Interview The Korean war was fought by North Korea (confederate) and South Korea (democrats). The Start Dividing Korea The Soviet Union and the United States each took over one half of Korea during WW ll. When the war ended they both had different views of the type of government Korea should have. They divided Korea into North Korea and South Korea. The 38th parallel is a latitude line 38 degrees north of the equator. It formed the border line between the two countries. The cold war The cold war began in 1947, shortly after the world war two ended. The war was between the soviet union who controlled the northern half of Korea and wanted a communist government and The United States who controlled the southern half of Korea with a democratic government.
