Transcript: Wisdom does not flow like water Plato’s Critique of Pederasty Pederasty Background Symposium Pederasty My Project Pausanias' Speech Pausanias' Speech Two Aphrodites Uranian Heavenly Pandemos Common Text Text Pictures Pictures "Here, Socrates, lie down alongside me, so that by my touching you, I too may enjoy the piece of wisdom that just occurred to you while you were in the porch. It is plain that you found it and have it, for otherwise you would not have come away beforehand." Agathon and Socrates “It would be a good thing, Agathon, if wisdom were the sort of thing that flows from the fuller of us into the emptier, just by our touching one another, as the water in wine cups flows through a wool thread from the fuller to the emptier. For if wisdom too is like that, then I set a high price on my being placed alongside you, for I believe I shall be filled from you with much fair wisdom. My own may turn out to be a sorry sort of wisdom, or disputable like a dream; but your own is brilliant and capable of much development, since it has flashed out so intensely from you while you are young; and yesterday it became conspicuous among more than thirty thousand Greek witnesses." "You are outrageous, Socrates," Agathon said. "A little later you and I will go to court about our wisdom, with Dionysus as judge, but now first attend to dinner." how water flows Principle at play When they do engage in a contest about love Timeline YEAR Alcibiades' Speech Socrates, he claims, is like “those silenuses that sit in the shops of herm sculptors, the ones that craftsman make holding reed pipes or flutes; and if they are split in two and opened up they show they have images of gods within.” (215b) Alcibiades' Speech You, in my opinion,' I said, 'have proved to be the only deserving lover of mine; and it seems to me that you hesitate to mention it to me. Now I am in this state: I believe it is very foolish not to gratify you in this or anything else of mine—my wealth or my friends—that you need; for nothing is more important to d me than that I become the best possible; and I believe that, as far as I am concerned, there is no one more competent than you to be a fellow helper to me in this. So I should be far more ashamed before men of good sense for not gratifying a man like you than I should be before the many and senseless for gratifying you.' Seduction Scene 'Really, my dear Alcibiades, you're no sucker if what you say about me is really true and there is some power in me e through which you could become better. You must see, you know, an impossible beauty in me, a beauty very different from the fairness of form in yourself. So if, in observing my beauty, you are trying to get a share in it and to exchange beauty for beauty, you are intending to get far the better deal. For you are trying to acquire the truth of beautiful things in exchange for the seeming and opinion of beautiful things; and you really have in mind to exchange "gold for bronze." But blessed one do consider better: Without your being aware of it—I may be nothing. Thought, you know, begins to have keen eyesight when the sight of the eyes starts to decline from its peak; and you are still far from that.' Conclusion conclusion If Socrates were to have sex with Alcibiades, he would perpetuate: 1) the idea that people can make each other wise. impact: prevent Alcibiades from realizing his ignorance about wisdom 2) Alcibiades belief that his physical attractiveness is the most important thing about him impact: the belief could harm Alcibiades as he begins to decline from his physical peak, when “Thought begins to have keen eyesight.” (219a) 3) Socrates would be no better than the sophists who cannot acknowledge the ways in which they are ignorant, and thus, risk self-deception. Advantages Advantages to my account: -Fits with the well-known picture of a Socrates who: 1) proclaims his own ignorance. 2) critiques the Sophists for i. both not acknowledging what they do not know ii. exchanging money for wisdom -Makes explicit the way Plato critiques the customs of his time -Throws into question a vision of Socrates as someone who consistently denies bodily urges -Makes clear that the container model is supposed to function in opposition to the image of pregnancy and birth. Accounts of “Plato’s Appropriation of Reproduction” run these two images together.

Transcript: Get Waisted The Self Tightening Belt What is it? What is this for? Component 2 For the busy-ness of everyday life, some people don't have time to put on a belt. They can show up to work in a rush and become embarassed with an undone belt. Our invention solves that. Functionality It's like magic. The belt has pressure sensors within the material that knows exactly how far to tighten the belt to. The user must put the belt on themselves one time and adjust it to their desired length, and the belt will remember how this pattern. Users place pressure on the belts logo for 3 seconds and the belt will tighten to their recorded measure, and do the opposite to release. Our belt gently travels through belt loops on its own and offers full How does it work? Why do we need a Patent? Patent A patent is used to give someone the right to create their unique product for 17 years. This prevents someone from stealing/reproducing their idea without giving the creator credit, and possibly profitting off of someone elses ideas. It's important to keep my own ideas safe. Patent Case https://ruwix.com/the-rubiks-cube/rubiks-cube-patent-intellectual-property/ This case describes the 'Ideal Toy Corporation' attempting to emulate the rubiks cube with a 2x2x2 knockoff. At the time, Larry D Nickols worked for the Rubiks cube company, and owned a patent for this product. He was then able to sue Ideal Toy Corporation, and the court ruled that they infringed on his copyright and had to stop selling their product. Patent Case

Transcript: Research Questions: •Is it possible to get involved as a 20 year old? •Do they offer classes strictly for adults? •What benefits do you gain from joining a karate Dojo as an adult? •How can the practice of karte/martial arts benefit your everyday life? Summary: •I wanted to find out why adults would join an adult ed karate class •Researched the Butoko Dojo on 24 & Garfield •Researched the 9-10pm Advanced level class •I wanted to look into the Cognitive, Physical, & Socialogical benefits that Karate had Survey Result: •The Question: “What do you feel you have gained from Karate?” •The Survey was consisted of 11 Dojo students o 6 of 11 (54.5%) Gained Self- Confidence o 2 of 11 (18.3%) Gained a Higher purposes o 3 of 11 (27.2%) Gained Miscellaneous traits •1 of 11 (9%) Gained the ability to handle real world scenarios •1 of 11 (9%) Learned to not quit/give up •1 of 11 (9%) is more physically fit Compelling Quote •I interviewed Ray Boyd. He was a 56 year old 4th degree black belt and a 9 year member of the Butoko Karate Dojo. • He and his wife both practice Karate at the Dojo. •I asked him the question “Have any conditions that you have had gotten better or worse from your practice of karate?” •He responded by telling me that he suffers from Dementia. He explained that “Repetitive motion and constantly thinking about things helps the neural pathways…I think without this I would have been in trouble”. Research Quote: •Dr. Price, a leading psychologist from Virili’s Academy of Royal Palm Beach, published a study called “Martial Arts and Cognitive Psychology” •He found that the practice of “martial arts would increase [one’s ability in] pattern-making. Through the constant repetition of practiced Kata and other similar skills, martial artists would be able to use the pattern identifying skills developed from this practice to identify with patterns that would be formed in other physical activities such as sports (I.E. soccer, baseball, ect...). This pattern identifying skill has the potential to also advance skills in mathematics by identifying repetition”. Moment in the field: •Kata identification Practice •Kata is a specific “routine” in karate that is constructed from various puches, kicks, and grabs. •Different Kata is performed at various tempos (similar to a dance). •The students lined up highest rank (on the Right) to lowest rank (On the Left). •The sensei would call one student to the front of the class then secretly tell that student a specific Kata to demonstrate •After watching the student perform, Sensei would go down the line and ask each student individually what type of kata they witnessed. •I thought that it was amazing that students could identify a specific type of form simply by identifying particular moves within the kata Conclusion •From My research I found that As an Adult , there are many beneficial reasons for joining a martial arts Dojo, •mental, physical, and sociological factors that play a critical part on their everyday lives. •repetitive motion promotes the connection of neural pathways in the brain and can lead to increased cognitive abilities. •help combat mental disorders, such as dementia. •maintain a fit stature. For most adults in the class, it is hard to schedule time with other obligations. •developing better sociological skills. The pacifist core mentality behind Karate promotes emotional control. •promote self-confidence. Increased levels of self-confidence can push a student top travel outside of their comfort zone and strive to achieve their goals. •There was one attribute, though, that I was only able to discover by immersing myself in the activity. •Each of the students becomes part of a family. •This family bond makes the students at the Dojo more than just classmates, they become friends •I believe that it is this attribute that outweighs all others.
