Transcript: Ice Skating I love ice skating. I always have and always will. So when with my dad asked me if I wanted to go last weekend I was really excited. My best friend Kaylee loves ice skating to so I called her up and asked her if she wanted to come. “Of course” she said excitedly. So we all piled in to the “Man Van” and drove to the pond. When we got to the spot we pulled over and jumped out of the van. It wasn’t a fancy ice rink, just a large pond on the banks of the Mississippi. Kaylee was the only one that had ice skates so my dad, brother, and I just wore boots. We played hockey for a wile (Kaylee and I lost 1 to 8) then Kaylee and I decided to go look around for more ponds or something cool. On the other side we found another small thin pond. My brother and dad were far off all the way on the other side of the pond to far off to see or hear us. Kaylee and I looked at each other in agreement and climbed over the hill and on to the small pond. Kaylee started laughing she was standing half a foot of water and she quickly got out so her skates wouldn’t get wet. I started laughing to. We headed back towards my dad and my brother “I think its time for some hot chocolate” I said and Kaylee and I started laughing again. We grabbed our hockey sticks and started back up the hill to the van. We had fun that day. Thanks for watching As we walked across it we herd small crunching sounds but didn’t think much of it. The ice cracked often and as long as it was only on the top of the ice that cracked it was fine. We kept walking down the ice, we were almost to the end of the long thin pond when Kaylee screamed and fell though the ice into the water. I was standing a few feet in frunt of her in whirled around to help her. We walked out farther on to the ice we used a long pole to hit the ice out ahead from us to check if the it was solid. We walked all the way across the pond to the other side, were we found a hill. I quickly climbed to the top and looked over.

The judges give GOE on each element (Grade of Execution) They will grade with a plus or minus. For first and second place winners they may receive a medal or cash prize.

Transcript: ice skating Ice skating is moving on ice by using ice skates. It can be done for a variety of reasons, including health benefits, leisure, traveling, and various sports. Ice skating occurs both on specially prepared indoor and outdoor tracks, as well as on naturally occurring bodies of frozen water, such as lakes and rivers. The figure skating competition requires intense training, elite skaters train can reach an average of 30 hours per week for 42 weeks a year. Figure skating can be practiced on any ice surface, natural or artificial, indoor or outdoor. International competitions take place at ISU indoor courts, preferably 60 x 30 meters and never less than 56 x 26 meters. Transcript: Figure Skating is a type of ice skating that emphasizes jumps, spins, and other movements that combine athletic skills and dance techniques. Figure skating involves the performance of various jumps, spins, and dance movement. Speed skating is a type of ice skating in the form of racing usually on an oval course against competitors or the clock. Speed skating is the sport of racing on ice skates. the blade on a speed skate is longer and thinner than that of hockey or a figure skater. History: The first ice skates were invented some time between 3000 and 1000 B.C. The blade was made by animal bones and were attached to the bottom of shoes. Later in the 14th century the Dutch put wooden blades on the bottom of their shoes with leather straps to hold it in place. A few years later the wooden blade was replaced with a metal blade. This helped the skaters keep their balance, which later popularized the sport. Brian Boitano Brian Boitano is an American figure skater. Brian is a four-time US national champion, two-time World Champion (in 1986 and 1988) and the 1988 Olympic gold medalist. He was born on October 22, 1963 in Mountain View, California. Boitano was the first American skater to land a triple axle. Brian was also the first skater to attempt a quadruple jump in competition. Brian's signature jump was the Tanotriple lutz where he raised his left arm above his head. In 1996, Brian was iducted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame. After turning professional in 1988, Boitano won six World Professional Championship titles. Mao Asada Mao Asada is a Japanese figure skater. Mao is the two-time (2007 & 2008) Japanese national champion. Mao is ranked first in the world. She was born in Nagoya, Aichi, Japan on September 25, 1990. Mao began skating in 1995. Mao became the first lady to land two triple axles during a free skate program at the 2005 Japanese National Figure Skating Championship. Mao finished second in the competition but was too young to qualify for the 2006 Winter Olympics figure skating competition due to International Skating Union eligibility rules. The Olympics or Olympic Games are international sporting events that show the friendship between countries while also celebrating athleticism. The Olympics were originally celebrated as a religious festival from 776 B.C to 393 A.D.,when the games were banned for being a pagan festival (the Olympics celebrated the Greek god Zeus). Ice skates are boots with blades attached to the bottom, used to propel the bearer across a sheet of ice.Origionally, skates were merely sharpened, flattened bone strapped to the bottom of the foot My Experience This is a picture of me ice skating with minnie I have been going to ice skating lessons for the last six months, and have now reached level six. For each level, there are lots of different moves and routines you have to learn and be able to do before they will pass you. Throughout the levels, I have learnt a lot and am always progressing. Once you reach level ten, you will be able to join the skate UK squad, the group that enters professional competitions - hopefully I will be there soon! I am only at the intermediate stage, there are lots of people who take ice skating a lot more seriously. People ice skate in the olympics, some people skate competitions all the time, some people just do it for fun! This is Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean. They won a gold medal at the 1984 winter olympics, and became the highest scoring figure skaters of all time. They achieved twelve 6.0's and six 5.9's. The pair retired from competitive skating, and after years of never skating together, put together a show. Dancing on Ice is for celebrities to compete each year, and learn how to do many different twists and turns throughout the weeks. This is a picture of Kim- Yu-Na. Last year she became the 2010 olympic figure skating champion. She has also won a fair few other competitions in her time. She has won the South Korean National figure skating title six times. She is also the 2009 World Figure Skating Champion, and the 2009 Four Continents champion. In addition, she is the 2007 and 2008 World figure skating bronze medalist, the 2007 Grand Prix Final champion, the 2006 World Junior figure skating champion, and the 2006 Junior Grand Prix Final Champion. Some places have outdoor ice rinks, this is usually in the winter when the ice will not melt. Other than this, you can always go to an indoor ice rink. These are people doing ice skating lessons. These people may decide to take ice skating further and more seriously, but for now, these pictures show people doing ice skating lessons, with Skate UK. SKATE UK.... Skate uk is an association that does a number of things. For one, The National Ice Skating Association is a British organisation that is responsible for the development of ice skating events and the assessment of ice skaters in the UK. It was formed in 1879 and its headquarters are in Nottingham. Also involved in it are a number of qualified coaches that are responsible for making peoples lessons worthwhile. This is where i am! Transcript: A force that is crucial to turning in ice skating is torque. Torque is the measurement of how much force acting on an object causes it to rotate. For example, when a skater turns they start with their legs apart and then pull them together. They cant just turn without this force, because there would be no torque. Skaters can use gravity to control their outcome. For example, a skater puts her weight on her left foot, gravity allowing her to do so, and she is able to go towards her left. M = ma * v This equation stands for momentum equals mass times velocity. The momentum a of a figure skater depends on how much they weigh times their velocity. This being said, the heavier the figure skater, the more momentum they will have. Gravity When a skaters arms are extended out, they are increasing the distance between the center mass. As a result, it takes more energy for her to spin faster. But when her arms are closer to her body, the moment of inertia is increased as her arms pull in. This is because her mass is closer to her center rotation and this makes it easier for her to spin. Maya Labinski Ice skating works because there is little friction between metal and ice. Since the friction is minimum the ice skater can easily glide on the ice. Friction is what slows us down. Ever noticed how you cant slide on a wood floor with bare feat? Friction stops you. For every reaction, there is an equal and opposite reaction. This is the most important Newton rule for ice skating. When an ice skater spins they press against the ice. The ice also presses against them. This is why it takes so much effort to pull your legs together on ice. Ice Skating Torque The physics behind it Inertia On Ice Newtons Third Law Ice has a minimum of kinetic friction at 19 degrees Fahrenheit. The less friction the ice has, the better to skate. This is why many ice skating rinks are around this temperature. There is minimum friction at 19 degrees Fahrenheit because a thin layer of water in its liquid form has covered the ice.
