More than 2,300 hydroelectric dams currently harness U.S. rivers to provide nearly 11%of the country'stotal energy supply. Producing power from river might seem strange because there are no billowing smokestacks.But hydropower can increase water temperatures, change levels and eliminate nauralriver flow. vermont and maine are already feeling the impacts of having thier water managed by absentee owners. Changes in both states are leading to rapidchanges in flows and eroding banks, and there is more to come. This dam (the three gorge dam in china) flooded archaeological and cultural sites, displaced 1.4 million people, and is causing significant ecological changes, including an increased risk of landslides. The building of the dam has been a controversial topic, both in China and abroad. WHERE AND HOW WE GET IT We get hydropower from the water rushing down dams. Hydropower is usually used in irrigation of land for farming. It can be used to power machinery like saw and water mills. China is the largest producer of hydropower followed by Canada, Brazil and the U.S.A.. Since no fuel is burned in the processes of hydropower there is no pollution or greenhouse gases going into the air. HOW WE USE IT AND WHO USES IT Hydropower is used to make electricity which mainly used to operate machines. Roughly 270,000 mega watts of hydroelectric power is in place a day. A mega watt is 1000 watts. Hydropower is used in 35 million homes nationwide and 1 billion homes worldwide. The 77,000 mega watts of electricity in the U.S. is equal to almost 500 barrels of oil. 11% of the electricity in the U.S. is from hydropower (77,000 mega watts). Transcript: Hydropower is energy that comes from the force of moving water. Hydropower in a renewable source because it replenished by snow and rainfall. We won't run out of this as long the sun shines and rain still falls. Hydropwer uses the water cycle to provide energy. More than 2,000 years ago, the Greeks used water wheels to grind wheat into flour. In the late 1800's American and European factories used water wheels to power machines. In the late 19th century, hydropower was first used to provide electrcity. Niagara Falls was the first hydroelectric plant built in 1879. Many more hydroelectirc dams have been built. By the 1940's the Untited States have had the best sites of hydroelectric dams. At the time, fossil fuel plants became popular and can make electricity cheaper than hydropower plants. The price of the oil skyrocketed in 1970's and people became intrested in hydropower again. The easiest way to build a hydro plant is on a river where there is flowing water. Building fake waterfalls across rivers is next best way. In the United States today, there are 80,000 dams but only 2,400 have equipment to generate electricity. Most of the dams are built to control flooding and irigate farm lands. We can increase the amount of hydropwer by putting eqipment to generate electricity on many of the existing dams. The biggest advantages of hydropower dams is that they are able to store energy. The water can be stored in a reservoir and realesed when electricity is needed. Consumers use less energy during the night so the gates can be closed and the water will be held in the resevoir. During the day, the gates with re-open so the consumers can use more energy. Hydropower plants use modern generators to produce electricity, the same way as coal, oil, and nuclear power plants do. The main difference is the fuel. Hydro plants use the force of flowing water to produce electricity. Hydro plant has a system of three main parts. A reservior where the water is stored, a dam where the gates control the water flow and a power plant where electricity is produced. Hydropower provides 5%-10% of the country's electricity. In South America, most of the electricity is produced by hydropower. 20% of the whole worlds electricity is produced by hydropower. Hydropower is the cheapest way to generate electricity in the United States. It is the cheapest because it uses flowing water, which is free to use! Hydropower is a clean energy source. The plants produce NO air pollution because it doesn't burn fuels. But it may disturb wild life and natural recources because it changes the water patterns. On the positive side, hyropwer's fuel supply is clean and renewable becuase it is flowing water. The other benifits are that they can be designed to control floods and provide lake for recreational activites.
