Transcript: Internships VS Volunteering Volunteer and Volunteering Quick Recap An INTERN: A student or trainee who works in an organization, in order to gain work experience or satisfy requirements for a qualification. An INTERNSHIP is a professional learning experience offered by an employer to , interns, to work at an organization for a fixed, limited period of time .Internships may be part-time or full-time. Internships in most sectors are paid. However, for nonprofits - internships can be unpaid if they meet federal and state requirements. Internship Test? Volunteers typically help a nonprofit, while an interns use this professional opportunity to grow in their career path. The purpose of both roles are different. Volunteers can use their existing skill sets to support an organization, while interns use these experiences as training for future career opportunities. HR Training The Department of Labor USA has laid out specifically guidelines on how an internship should be designed. While it strictly mandates that for-profit organizations pay interns for the duration of their internships, it recognizes that different rules must be created for nonprofit organizations (which are still under review). However, it is recommended that nonprofit organizations follow these guidelines to design an internship program. VOLUNTEER is someone who freely offers to take part in an enterprise or undertakes a task. VOLUNTEERING refers to hours of service performed for an organization for “civic, charitable, or humanitarian reasons, without promise, expectation, or receipt of compensation for services rendered.” Expectations: Volunteer and volunteering is an unpaid position where the individual freely partakes to satisfy his or her personal goals. Opportunities for volunteer and volunteering are available depending upon the organization. Volunteer Vs Intern Intern & Internship Is the intern provided with tasks that are not equivalent to a paid job? Internships vs Volunteer programs - which works for your organization? Tips & Tricks Are interns provided with training of the organization facilities, safety, and operations similar to an educational environment? Will the intern gain experience in the organization that may further his/her agenda? Are tasks given to the interns specifically different and do not hinder task of paid employees? Are interns told that there is no guarantee hiring after completion of internship? Are interns told that their work is not entitled to compensation of wages? Internship Guidelines The internship: Is similar to training which would be given in an educational environment Benefits the intern The intern does not displace regular employees, but works under close supervision of existing staff The employer derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the intern; and on occasion its operations may actually be impeded The intern is not necessarily entitled to a job at the conclusion of the internship The employer and the intern understand that the intern is not entitled to wages for the time spent in the internship Tips & Tricks continued It may be appropriate to classify the intern as a "trainee" – which is a special category of employees in federal wage and hour regulations for which the minimum wage does not apply. Trainees do not have to be paid minimum wage (and thus may be unpaid or receive a "stipend" that amounts to less than minimum wage). Areas of Caution Be aware that if your nonprofit considers its interns "volunteers," but pays them a "stipend," paying the stipend may cause the Department of Labor to classify the intern as an employee. Employees must be paid at least minimum wage and are subject to withholdings. Internship Programs Tips & Tricks Think about the future Document expectations Manage the risk of accidents/injuries to the intern Clarify the workplace policies that apply to your interns INTERN AND INTERNSHIP INTERNSHIP PROGRAMS VOLUNTEERS VS. Great with students, workers, family, etc. For example: With games like Jeopardy and Family Feud, players can pick practically any answers. The person who is running the game will have to have all of the answers in order to determine if players are correct or not. However, with a game like Who Wants to be a Millionaire, the players only have a choice between answers, A, B, C, or D. Therefore, when the player decides their answer, the person running the game clicks it, and the game will tell them whether they are right or wrong.
