This is an area of great interest for the Section. Immigration is an integral part of American society, as we ourselves were born out of an immigrant movement to this “new world.” Today, immigrants face unique challenges that are a definite issue of civil rights and social justice. On a daily basis, immigrants deal with prejudices, discrimination, and outright brutality because of circumstances, that in many cases, they could not control. [Mention active Committees] The United States, as it is comprised of today, has 41 million immigrants living within its expansive borders (13% of the entire population). Each year, the United States government spends $1.84 billion on detaining immigrants, for what are many times, unjust reasons. Among those detained and many times, deported, are unaccompanied minors. As a concern of the ABA as a whole, undocumented children can easily become victims of the red-tape laden legal system of the United States. Undocumented children do not know who to turn to and when they are not afforded legal representation, 85% of them are deported, even though they may have a right to stay in this country. This humanitarian concern, an issue of civil rights and equal opportunity, must be addressed and it is a paramount affair of the ABA. [Insert information about Committee programming coming up] Thank you for your continued support of the Section.
