Fall Leaves
Transcript: Colors (cont.) Colors Changing Leaves -air gets cooler, less daylight- trees shut down their systems for winter. -they do so by moving nutrients out of leaves and into their branches, leaves and roots. -green leaves contain yellow and orange (carotene) and red (anthocyanin) colors in the spring and summer, you just can't see them because they're covered up by green chlorophyll -brown leaves- tannin (found in oaks) -chlorophyll uses energy to make sugars that feed tress in warm months -the "abscission layer" is what causes the leave to fall off the tree. -Deciduous tress such as maple, aspen, oak, and gum produce the most vivid colors in North America -main factors that contribute to fall colors are temperature, precipitation, soil moisture, and light. The amount of light relates to the timing of the autumnal equinox. Fall Leaves
