Transcript: Country of Employment: England and the Netherlands Hudson's most notable discoveries were the Hudson Strait, Bay, and River. Purpose of Exploration First Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage for English merchants belonging to the Muscovy Company. Second Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage for Dutch merchants belonging to Dutch East India Company. Third Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage for English Merchants belonging to British East India Company and the Virginia Company. Purpose of Exploration: First Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage. Second Voyage- Support the findings from the first voyage. Third Voyage- Establish a colony on Baffin Island. John Cabot is believed to be the first explorer to find North America since the vikings. A Licensed Pirate Country of Employment: Great Britain Voyage Details First Voyage- 1534. One ship, the Grande Hermine. Contained explorers and surveyors to find valuable resources. They explored along the coast of Newfoundland and into the Gulf of the St. Lawrence. Cartier kidnapped two Iroquois. The whole journey Cartier and the crew believed they had found an asian land. Second Voyage- 1534. Three ships, the Grand Hermine, the Petite Hermine, and the Emerillon. Cartier had a crew of 110 men, and his two Iroquois captives. They travelled further down the St. Lawrence, certain that it was the Northwest Passage. Cartier captured even more Iroquois, but most died that winter of scurvy. Third Voyage- 1541. Five ships, the Grande Hermine, Emerillon, Georges, Saint-Brieux, and one unnamed ship. The crew found a large amount of what they thought was gold and diamond, but they turned out to be fools gold and quartz. Cartier and his group established a small fort at present-day Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Surprising, the Iroquois did not welcome Cartier back, so he returned to France dejected. Country of Employment: France EXPLORERS Of Early Canada Martin Frobisher Purpose for Exploration- First Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage to gain easy access to Asia through North America. Second Voyage- Travel inland through a possible passage and attempt to make it to Asia. Third Voyage- Find riches in North America and establish a permanent settlement along the St. Lawrence River. The First to Find Canada Champlain is most famous for his founding of Quebec, be he explored and mapped many places, such as Conception Bay, Port Royal, and Cape Cod. Voyage Details: First Voyage- 1603. One ship, the Bonne-Renommee (Good Fame) was owned by a fur trader by the name of Francois Grave Du Pont. Champlain was an observer on the ship and was their cartographer. Second Voyage- 1604. Joined a merchant ship captained by Pierre Dugua; a friend of Champlain's. Champlain was brought along by Dugua to help find a location to build a winter settlement. Third Voyage- 1608. Three ships, led by Champlain's ship: Don de Dieu (the Gift of God). The ships carried workers to help build Quebec city. Cartier was most famous for his exploration of the St. Lawrence, opening it up for explorers in the future; as well as his interaction with the Iroquois. One examples of this is when he got into a war with a small kingdom and won, bringing the king and his family back to China. He was made a judge in Delhi by the Sultan and controlled the tax collection and the punishments given out. Also, he traveled to all the major Islamic sites and helped spread Islamic belief. Transcript: Yuri Gagarin explorers assignment Yuri Gagarin early life Yuri Gagarin Yuri Gagarin was born in 1934 at the Russian village of klushino. His parents worked on a collective farm Yuri was the third of four children. Transcript: Age of Exploration Countries and Explorers: Countries and Explorers: England: England: Francis Drake: -First Englishman to circumnavigate the world -From 1577-80 -Defeated the Spanish Armada in 1588 Francis Drake set sail in 1577 to go around South America through the Strait of Magellan to explore the coast. When he got back, the Queen herself was impressed. Later on, he defeated the Spanish Armada. Francis Drake: Henry Hudson: -His goal was to find a shorter route to Asia through the Americas -Sailed from 1607-11 Hudson spent most of his life looking for a route to Asia. However, he never did, but ended up exploring more of North America instead. After his voyage, the Hudson Strait was named after him. Henry Hudson: France: France: Jacques Cartier: -Cartier named Canada -He explored the Canadian coast -1534-42 Jacques Cartier: Cartier set sail in 1534 to explore parts of the Canadian coast. He named the new land Canada, and was credited for it. He conquered it for France, then left in 1542. Spain: Spain: Christopher Columbus: Christopher Columbus: -Born in Italy but explored for/sponsored by Spain -He was supposed to find a route to India by sailing west, but ended up in the Carribeans -1492-1504 Columbus was born in Italy, but Spain sponsored him. When he was trying to find a western route to India, he ended up in the Americas. Still, this opened up ways for exploration. Francisco Pizzaro: Francisco Pizzaro: -Sailed to Peru -1502 -Pizzaro conquered the Incan Empire -Founded the city of Lima Pizzaro was a conquistador, who lead a great expedition to South America. He sailed from Europe to conquer the Incan Empire. Once there, he captured and killed the Incan emporer, Atahualpa, claiming the land for Spain. Hernan Cortez: Hernan Cortez: -Sailed to Mexico -1519-21 -Conquered the Aztec Empire In 1519, Cortez set sail for Mexico, to claim new land for Spain. He discovered the Aztecs, who welcomed him. Later on, he conquered it for Spain. Portugal: Portugal: Ferdinand Magellan: Ferdinand Magellan: -He sailed the Pacific Ocean and discovered the Strait of Magellan -First explorer to circumnavigate the world -1505-21 He set sail across the Pacific in 1505, with his crew of men, Later on, he discovered the Strait of Magellan, at the southern tip of South America. He discovered many new lands among his voyage. Vasco da Gama: Vasco da Gama: -He sailed to India by going around Africa by boat -1497-1502 Portugal sponsored him to find a way to India, without making the mistake that Columbus did. So he went along the coast of Africa and landed in India by 1502. This lead for a new sea route, that's more reliable than the Northwest Passage.

Transcript: Juan Bautista de Anza Juan Bautista de Anza was born on July 6, 1736 in Fronteras, Sonora, Mexico. Both of his parents were spanish. His father's name was Juan Bautista de Anza l. His mother's name was Maria Rosa Bezerra Nieto. Juan was named after his father, Juan. Birth Birth Title Anza's father and grandfather had both been military captains in Sonora, Mexico. They had talked about a new trail to California.Anza became captain of Tubac. Anza was considered one of the best trailblazers in the Mexican West. Juan's father served as a part of Anza Before the Voyages Before the Trips In January 1774 35 men left Tubac and headed west. Anza was one of these 35. The group had to go to the Colorado River and float on tule rafts. Once they got to the desert, they wandered around for 10 days before their guide, Sebastian Tarabel, an indian, recognized some familiar landmarks. When they finally reached Monterey, Anza decided to go back to Spain to prepare for the second trip. He and his group reached safely back at Spain. The First Voyage Voyages Anza's second voyage left in late 1775 in Horcasistas,Mexico. There were about 240 people including men, women, and children. Many people didn't want to go to California. They were given supplies or land as an incentive to go. When Anza and his group reached Mission San Gabriel, he heard a mission in San Diego had been attacked by indians. He took a detour to go help them. The group reached Monterey on March 10, 1776. Anza went to San Francisco to pick out a site for the mission.
