Transcript: Country of Employment: England and the Netherlands Hudson's most notable discoveries were the Hudson Strait, Bay, and River. Purpose of Exploration First Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage for English merchants belonging to the Muscovy Company. Second Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage for Dutch merchants belonging to Dutch East India Company. Third Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage for English Merchants belonging to British East India Company and the Virginia Company. Purpose of Exploration: First Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage. Second Voyage- Support the findings from the first voyage. Third Voyage- Establish a colony on Baffin Island. John Cabot is believed to be the first explorer to find North America since the vikings. A Licensed Pirate Country of Employment: Great Britain Voyage Details First Voyage- 1534. One ship, the Grande Hermine. Contained explorers and surveyors to find valuable resources. They explored along the coast of Newfoundland and into the Gulf of the St. Lawrence. Cartier kidnapped two Iroquois. The whole journey Cartier and the crew believed they had found an asian land. Second Voyage- 1534. Three ships, the Grand Hermine, the Petite Hermine, and the Emerillon. Cartier had a crew of 110 men, and his two Iroquois captives. They travelled further down the St. Lawrence, certain that it was the Northwest Passage. Cartier captured even more Iroquois, but most died that winter of scurvy. Third Voyage- 1541. Five ships, the Grande Hermine, Emerillon, Georges, Saint-Brieux, and one unnamed ship. The crew found a large amount of what they thought was gold and diamond, but they turned out to be fools gold and quartz. Cartier and his group established a small fort at present-day Cap-Rouge, Quebec. Surprising, the Iroquois did not welcome Cartier back, so he returned to France dejected. Country of Employment: France EXPLORERS Of Early Canada Martin Frobisher Purpose for Exploration- First Voyage- Find the Northwest Passage to gain easy access to Asia through North America. Second Voyage- Travel inland through a possible passage and attempt to make it to Asia. Third Voyage- Find riches in North America and establish a permanent settlement along the St. Lawrence River. The First to Find Canada Champlain is most famous for his founding of Quebec, be he explored and mapped many places, such as Conception Bay, Port Royal, and Cape Cod. Voyage Details: First Voyage- 1603. One ship, the Bonne-Renommee (Good Fame) was owned by a fur trader by the name of Francois Grave Du Pont. Champlain was an observer on the ship and was their cartographer. Second Voyage- 1604. Joined a merchant ship captained by Pierre Dugua; a friend of Champlain's. Champlain was brought along by Dugua to help find a location to build a winter settlement. Third Voyage- 1608. Three ships, led by Champlain's ship: Don de Dieu (the Gift of God). The ships carried workers to help build Quebec city. Cartier was most famous for his exploration of the St. Lawrence, opening it up for explorers in the future; as well as his interaction with the Iroquois.
