Transcript: Welcome students! 1. to foster clear awareness of, and concern about, economic, social, political and ecological interdependence in urban and rural areas; 2. to provide every person with opportunities to acquire the knowledge, values, attitudes, commitment and skills needed t o protect and improve the environment; and 3. to create new patterns of behaviour of individuals, groups and society as a whole towards the environment. Since the 1970s, environmental education has been a part of Australian schooling. Outcome What does this have to do with sustainability? Sustainability: More than just information The 1980s and 1990s saw the language of sustainability popularised by organisations including the United Nations and the World Commission on Environment and Development. Now it became even clearer that a sustainable future was dependent on understanding the complex relationships between ecological, social, political and economic systems. Due its complex nature, studying sustainability involves more than just acquiring knowledge and understanding. It requires us to adjust our attitudes and commitment to global issues. Additionally, it assists in the development of critical thinking and emphasises the importance of working together to achieve positive outcomes. These were highly influential in the move towards teaching sustainability as opposed to focusing purely on the destruction of natural ecosystems. New goals 'Education and the Environmental Crisis' 'Sustainability' emerges At this point in time the concept of sustainability hadn't yet gained popularity. Rather, it was still a period of environmentalism in which a focus was placed on conservation and preserving ecosystems without acknowledging the economic, social and political effects on environmental change (and vice versa). Sustainability: A complex system These new goals resulted in a greater understanding of the true nature and teaching of environmental issues. At this point it became clear that solving environmental problems required economic, social and political policies, and technological change. Environmental Education To help better understand the complex nature of sustainability, the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) created a model which shows the interlocking dimensions of sustainability. That's it! The Three Goals So there you have it! You should now have an understanding of how you came to be learning about sustainability and the benefits it offers in the 21st Century! Why? Prior to the 1970s concerns had grown for natural ecosystems worldwide. Some of the major problems acknowledged included pollution, population growth and depletion of natural resources. It was understood at this time that ALL people should start to understand the negative effects they were having on the environment. The Road to Learning about 'Sustainability' To get the idea of environmental education rolling, the Australian Academy of Science convened the country's first conference on the topic in April 1970. Held over three days (24-26), 'Education and the Environmental Crisis' aimed to identify the perspectives and responsibilities pertaining to environmental change, as well as methods to teach young people about how to improve the future. Transcript: Environmental Justice What is it? The environmental justice or EJ movement and the environmental movement are distinct, yet overlapping struggles. The modern EJ movement has its roots in the intersection of the Civil Rights movement and the environmental movement. The EJ movement has since expanded to addressing the kinds of environmental inequalities being studied in areas such as transportation, health, housing, and smart growth/land use, water, energy development, brownfields, and militarization Studies of occupational exposures in the garment industry and in Silicon Valley factories staffed by Asian and Latino immigrant women workers, (Pellow and Park 2003) Native American communities imperiled by military wastes and hazards (Hooks and Smith 2004) Analyses of gender and the role of women as protagonists in environmental justice activism. (Allen (2003), Peeples and DeLuca (2006), and Di Chiro (1998) ) Youth environmental justice activism has also sparked a number of works that examine the issue of age/generation in environmental justice (Sze et al. 2005) Similarly, London (2007), Driskell (2002), and Chawla et al. (2005) describe the role of youth-led participatory action research in promoting youth voices and perspectives in the improvement and redesign of urban neighborhoods.
