Mona Lisa Video Renaissance Defining characteristics 14th – 17th century period, began in Italy Bridge between middle ages and modern era Intellectual movement called humanism Term Renaissance means- “rebirth” “The discovery and exploration of new continents, the substitution of the Copernican for the Ptolemaic system of astronomy, the decline of the feudal system and the growth of commerce, and the invention or application of such potentially powerful innovations as paper, printing, the mariner's compass, and gunpowder” (Guisepi, n.d) The period is characterized by a rebirth among English elite of classical learning, a rediscovery of ancient Greek and Roman authors, and a recovery of the ancient Greek spirit of scientific inquiry (British Literature Survey, n.d). English literary accomplishment: a major writer was William Shakespeare Music The style of painting, sculpture and decorative arts identified with the Renaissance emerged in Italy in the late 14th century; it reached its zenith in the late 15th and early 16th centuries, in the work of Italian masters such as Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo and Raphael. In addition to its expression of classical Greco-Roman traditions, Renaissance art sought to capture the experience of the individual and the beauty and mystery of the natural world. Leonardo da Vinci, the ultimate "Renaissance man," practiced all the visual arts and studied a wide range of topics, including anatomy, geology, botany, hydraulics and flight. His formidable reputation is based on relatively few completed paintings, including "Mona Lisa," "The Virgin of the Rocks" and "The Last Supper." It was common for artists of this time to paint religious images of subjects such as, The Last Supper, Sistene Chapel, or the The Virgin Mary that at the time were considered devotional objects, but are now considered works of art. The Renaissance was a time of growing knowledge for the poor, the idea of humanism and the idea of free thinking (History, 2012). The idea of Humanism was that humans had the ability to do anything Visual and performing arts provided pivotal inspiration during this time giving people the courage and ability to revive cultural ideals, values, and intellect lost during previous centuries. What the music "lost" in rhythmic complexity, it gained in rhythmic vitality, as a "drive to the cadence" became a prominent feature around mid-century 1470- music starts to be printed using a printing press Famous makers- Neuschel for his trumpets Music was polyphony -is a texture consisting of two or more simultaneous lines of independent melody 1534 until around 1600, an impressive poly-choral style developed, which gave Europe some of the grandest, most sonorous music composed up until that time, with multiple choirs of singers, brass and strings in different spatial locations St. Mark's Basilica which led to the Baroque era. This time was considered to be the early middle ages, and the art during this time was very distinct. (Goldberg, 2006). 2 #1 Characteristics of The Renaissance Period The Italian Renaissance is best known for its cultural goals and achievements. The focuses of art were prominent in religious themes, and the artists developed techniques that depicted life-like expressions in faces and these techniques also included natural looking landscapes (Goldberg, J. 2007). #2 Characteristics of The Renaissance Period Continued... The Renaissance period re-established Western art according to the principles of Greek art, Greek sculpture, and painting (The Encyclopedia of Art, 2018). This period adopted the "humanism" philosophy. This steered away from the secular and religious philosophies and gave more emphasis on an individual's worth (The Encyclopedia of Art, 2018). #3 The Renaissance period was the time of "New discoveries in fine arts, music, literature, philosophy, science and technology, architecture, religion and spirituality" (Elkins, M. 2018). Retrieved from http://www.theartstory.org/movement-impressionism.htm Impressionism was an artistic movement that began in the mid-1800 to 1900’s. It differed from the defined lines and bold focal points of previous year’s artworks. Artist of impressionism used light and dark to convey or impress the images they saw. They painted themes of nature and landscapes. Many of these artists were shunned because of their lack of clarity in line work. The impressionists’ works were not of realism but the natural light and darkness of the moment (The Art Story Modern Art Insight, 2016). Artists Gustave Courbet Edouard Manet Claude Monet Auguste Renoir Auguste Rodin Edgar Degas Georges Seurat Vincent van Gogh Paul Gaugin Edvaud Munch The Impressionist Period: 1860-1880 Began in France when new artists wanted to capture a moment in time. Critics said the art was "impressions" of reality. By 1880, impressionism was very popular throughout the world. References Drama Dance was one of the most magnificent movements the history of art ever to exist. The whole process of the human movements through both interaction, and body and movement was ultimately the cornerstone of the Romantic and Impressionist era. Some of the popular dances during this time included, ballet, waltz, and even cabaret. Some of the significant dancers during this time include; Marie Sallie, Marie Tagloni, Filippi Tagloni, Fanny Essler, and Carlotta Grisi. Some of the notable choreographers of this time include Jules Pennet, Paul Tagloni, Jean Coralli, and Joseph Mazilier. The relevant time frame includes the Romantic era which occurred during the early 19th century, and Impressionism which occurred during the late 19th century. The movement originated as a way of visual expression in art works. This was by far one of the most important movements which led to the miracle of the 20th century of modern art. Dance in the 19th century played a very dominant role not only in the dance halls but also in social arenas around the world. Dance was and still continues to be widely used during social events, and as spectacles. Dances was and is a source of inspiration around the globe. Some influential Opera performers: Wolfgang von Goethe Friedrich Schiller Henrik Ibsen Constantin Stanislavski Actors: The Kembles Edmund Kean The Romantic Period: 1790-1850 Began as a reaction to the Industrial Revolution in Europe. Romanticism glorified individualism, subjectivism, irrationalism, imagination, emotions and nature as a rebellious statement against social and religious set up. Wolfgang von Goethe Visual Arts Dance César Franck Johann Strauss II Johannes Brahms George Bizet Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky Antonín Dvo?ák Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov Gabriel Fauré John Philip Sousa Giacomo Puccini Gustav Mahler Claude Debussy Richard Strauss Scott Joplin Ralph Vaughan Williams Sergei Rachmaninoff In the early 1800s to 1850, romanticism influenced drama by the arts, literature, and intellectual movement. One of the main ideas during this time was the importance of nationalism. Romantic drama appealed to emotions rather than intellect. Special effects focused on the supernatural and mysterious. These special effects included flying, trap doors, and water pump systems. The costumes of this time period were realistic and detail was an important theme throughout the theatre. During this time, Aristocrats went to operas and ballets, but the middle class went to the theatre. During this time, the audience sized increased, seeing was more important that sound. Orchestra seats were more in demand and were more valuable, in order to see the actors and their movements. Stage production included backdrops of natural settings and lighting from candles and oil lamps. The opera was the main influence for drama. The Romantic period in music is considered from approx. 1790-1910. This period overlaps some with the classical period and early modern periods of music. The romantic period had a broad range of musical styles but had many defining characteristics that set it apart from other musical periods. Romantic period music was heavily influenced by the ever growing culture of nationalism. This was at the height and the beginning of the fall of European imperialism. Every country and region had a distinct sound and most art music was based on folk or common melodies to appeal to the ever growing middle class. This was due to an economic shift from agriculture to industrial with the dawn of the industrial revolution.

Transcript: August is very brave. Because he has never been to school and is so brave, to have the confidence to go to public and show how he's different. August is caring. Because he saw a girl on the first day of school and, went to sit with her at lunch because she had no one eat with. August is different. Because of his face, but everyone is thinking he has a disease whenever he walks by someone and sees his face. August is loving. Because he is very loving, with his friends and family whenever he sees them he's always proud when he's nice to someone. Words learned Summer Setting from the story Inferences I made as I read via August Theme Inference I made Inference I made Jack will knew August since he was really little but jack will didn't know really that he could be his friend. Jack will is August's friend and in Wonder in jack will's point of view it said they got into a little argument but are best friends again. So that tells me that maybe they don't know each other to well to know their ups and down day's. So I think that jack will is trusting but kind of confusing sometimes. Inference I made August Pullman is a 5th grader at becher prep. He has something wrong with his face he has a clef palate. August has one sister Via she is in high school. Wonder Template The text said that August came home from school and was with Via and his mom and they all got into a fight and daisy was just laying down and August went to his room and layed on his bed and covered his face with his covers. Then he was thinking his mom would come in but she didn't so he went out and saw his mom laying down by daisy and she was very sick so his mom said to say goodbye to daisy and took her to the doctor. And I know that when someone get's into a fight something bad can happen, something very bad can happen. So my inference is maybe something bad happened at school with August and he got really upset and discouraged. How August changed through the story is that he became so much stronger with his friends and made so much more friends that really think August is a great friend to have. First person-Told from the view of the character in the story(i,me,mine) one person's point of view. Second person- When the author is talking to the reader;authors perspective. Third person-narrator is telling the story from the outside; ( he, she, they, them persons name don't get any character perspective's Third person-(limited); Narrator knows the thoughts and feelings of one single character;;9 he,she, they, them person's name); from the perspective of one single character. third person( omniscient )- Narrator is knowing(he,she, they, them person's name); perspective of all character. Why August is my favorite is. Because he is a very sweet kid and very brave to make a huge change in his life. The theme of Wonder is that be yourself and try new things, and don't be afraid of what you discover. Point of View August Pullman Miranda is Via's friend and when August was little Miranda was his buddy. Miranda uses the words in Wonder on her point of view ( I, my) . The text said that August is at school after winter break and he saw Jack will and he said why were you gone and Jack will said well. And I know that when people over here something and it's bad they might get furious and hurt them in a way. So my inference is that maybe Jack will heard something and it came from Julianne. My favorite character is August. Because he is so daring because he's never been to school and got into a very awesome school Becher prep. Ms. Gill Justin is Via's boyfriend and when Via took Justin to her house he met August for the very first time and I think he was really surprised, to see August in person. Justin is also good at playing the fiddle and I can also tell that he really likes Via and her family I bet he liked to meet her parents and told them how he felt about Via, at dinner. So I think Justin is feeling proud that Inference I made - fragile means something that can get hurt very easily. - adore means you are wanting or love that something you adore so much. - syndrome means that someone has a medical issue. - lottery means that you won something that you played it for. - awful means that someone is feeling bad or something awful has happened. Summer and August went to there egiption museum together and Summer saw Jack will and he said what is wrong with August and Summer said " bleeding scream". Summary The text said that Summer brought August home from school and August asked why Summer's dad looked different. And I know that some kids are different from who their mom married so if they have kids they would be different to. So my inference is that maybe Summer's dad is a different color and her mom is a different color to so maybe Summer is mixed with her mom's color and her dad's color. My favorite scene from wonder is when August and Summer are eating lunch in their cafeteria because there was a lot of action in the cafeteria and i know there's a lot of action in

Much of the movement is owed to the increasing sophistication of society, which was characterized by politcal stability, economic growth, and cosmopolitanism.
