Transcript: "Little Boy" atomic bomb at the National Museum of the United States Air Force. Many of the wounded in the atom bomb attacks would die in the coming days, months and even years due to radiation exposure and burns. Transcript: The most powerful weapon ever designed. The most concentrated release of explosions ever. 40 million pounds of TNT. Weighs about 9,000 pounds. Heavily loaded. When the bomb hits it will burn at 1 million degrees Celsius and will be 10 times brighter than the sun. President Harry Truman 33rd President of the United States Saw the ending of WWII Decision to use the bomb was last minute He gave orders on August 3, 1945, but due to the weather, bomb wasn't dropped until August 6. Did not truly understand the impact the bomb would have but did know it would bring an end to the war. Truman has his speech prepared and ready to read but has left the city blank, as the crew doesn't know what city it will drop the bomb on until they are in the air. Enola Gay Consisted of a 12 man crew Named after pilot Col. Paul Tibbets' mother Tibbits is given 12 cyanide capsules just before takeoff, one for each crew member, because this is so secret of a mission and if the plane is shot down every crew member faces torture and possible execution and these would take less than 10 seconds to kill painlessly. Two other B-29s accompany the Enola Gay: Great Artiste is carrying scientific instruments, the Necessary Evil carries specialist observers, while the Enola Gay carries the bomb. Hiroshima, Japan Had not been affected by the war yet. Had never been bombed. It is a perfect cloudless day, and the city is alerted to the air raid and sees the B-29s. No one reacts because this has happened many times before and they were never bombed so no one pays attention. When the Enola Gay went flying overhead, locals did not take cover, as they had seen many planes pass by without ever being bombed. They had no idea what was about to happen. There were 3 other designated targets just in case. Three weather planes will fly one hour ahead to each target, the weather chooses the target, and on this day it was Hiroshima. Of this day, reportedly only 5 photos were taken and survived. "Little Boy" Video on Hiroshima and Nagasaki

Transcript: Chapter 10: Little Boy Noah Nieves 5/9/17 Truman Truman President Truman had conducted test that was nicknamed the "Trinity test". The "Trinity test" was mistaken for an explosion at the alamogordo air base in New Mexico. People everywhere heard and felt the blast, as far as El Paso Texas. At the time of the test president Truman was in Potsdam Germany with Joseph Stalin. Truman Cont. Truman Cont. Truman was informed of the uranium bombs potential. It was a success. The Bomb had the force of 18,000 tons of TNT. While reading the letter from the states on the new bomb Truman was "Tremdously pepped up". "We have discovered the most terrible bomb in the history of the world". Truman wrote in his diary. It gave the president "An entirely new feeling of confidence". Truman vs Stalin Truman vs Stalin Truman Stopped Stalin while at a Soviet Premier and recalled "I casually mentioned to Stalin that we had a new weapon of unusual desteuctive force". Truman was hoping to get a fearful look from Stalin. Stalin turned and said "glad to hear it, I hope you make good use of it aginst the Japanese". Stalin went to Kurchatov and told him they had to speed up there work meaning they wanted there atomic bombs done and ready to use so that the United States doesnt have an advantage on them. Little Boy Little Boy It was time to make a decison The United States was preparing for a full on invasion of Japan. It was expected to have a quarter of a million American casualties from the invasion. Truman came to the conclusion that in order to save American lives but still leave an impression on Japan and make them stop fighting they had to drop this bomb on them. Japan Japan The United States called upon Japan saying "We call upon the government of Japan to proclaim now the unconditional surrender of all Japanese armed forces, the alternative for Japan is prompt and utter destruction". Japanese leaders (Big 6) came together and discussed there options, the outcome was 50/50. Japan was known for there will to fight, and did not wanna give up that reputation. Prime Minister Baron Suzuki said "There is no other recourse but to ignore it entirely and resolutely fight for the successful conclusion of the war". The birth of Little Boy The Birth of Little Boy Little boy was assembled in a tiny air conditioned hut. The bomb was later then loaded onto General Tibbetes plane. The crew waited for the weather to clear up and the green light to take off. As the weather cleared three B-29 bombers flew down the runway enroute japan. "Little Boy" was aboard one of the three B-29 bombers called the Enola Gay. Green light Green light The weather Planes gave them the green light. Tibbets decoded the message from the weather planes and announced to his crew "Its Hiroshima".
