Transcript: Work Cited Draw Conclusions Critical Thinking in College and Everyday Life Whatever else you do in college, make it a point to develop and sharpen your critical-thinking skills. You won't become an accomplished critical thinker overnight. Critical thinkers, in contrast, investigate problems, ask questions, pose new answers that challenge the status quo, discover new information, questions authorities and traditional beliefs, challenge received dogmas and doctrines, make independent judgments, and develop creative solutions. "Critical thinking is that mode of thinking about any subject, content, or problem in which the thinker improves the quality of {his or her} thoughts." Creative brainstorming and group discussion encourage original thought. Becoming A Critical Thinker One the day an important paper is due, a heavy snowstorm rolls in. You brave the cold to get to class. When you arrive, no one-including the teacher-is there. You take a seat & wait. The first step of thinking critically is to engage your curiosity.Instead of accepting statements and assertions at face value, question them. Gardner, John N., Jewler, A. Jerome, Barefoot, Betsy O. Your College Experience. Boston, MA: Bedford/St. Martin's Having more than one student involved in the learning process generates a greater number of ideas. How Collaboration Fosters Critical Thinking What Is Critical Thinking and Why is It Important? www.google.com Consider Multiple Points Of View Before heading out to class in a big snowstorm, you check the college Web site and discover that classes have been canceled. You stay home. Whether in person or through electronic communication, teamwork improves your ability to think critically. Once you start asking questions, you'll typically discover a slew of different possible answers competing for your attention. Critical thinking is the ability to think for yourself and to reliably and responsibly make the decision that affect your life. Ask Questions When you can't reach a classmate on the phone to ask a question about tomorrow's quiz, you review the material once more, then call one or more other classmates. Then you consider their views and those of your textbook & class. www.jumpstart.com › Home › parents › Activities Once you have considered different points of view, it's up to you to reach your own conclusions, to craft a new idea based on what you've learned, or to make a decision about what you'll do with the information you have.

Weasel words : Happy Glowing Youthful Work effectively Enhance Retain Long term results Truth Relevance,Adequacy, Alternative Adequacy Adequacy is a consideration to prove the points given by providing sufficient evidence. The advertisement mentioned: 99% experienced improved skin hydration and smoothness. 80% showed significant reduction of fine lines and wrinkles. Consumer may not know whether the data provided is true or false. Alternatives Alternative in an argument is that we should to choose the best alternative we can think of. Since these ingredient is good for us, why not we consider the food or supplementary products? Consume the food products containing these ingredient will save more time instead of apply it. Relevance Relevance refers to whether the reasons or evidence apply to our conclusion. The model said “ I’m happy… I feel the love on my happy skin! And even with all the years together, Clinelle keeps my skin glowing and youthful… it’s all making my face happy too! , This proves that tag line of these products are relevance and suitable. Conclusion The “ Dermocapsule Gold Age Control Serum ” is worth to give it a try because it is truth and relevance. However, there are still some fallacy of this product and we can detect it based on factors of adequacy and alternative as discussed above. Paragmatism TRUTH Logic is concerned in reasoning whether a proposition is true or not. However, logic does not deal with truth in the absolute sense. Logicians use formal languages to express the truths which they are concerned with, and as such there is only truth under some interpretation or truth within some logical system. The advertisement for the beauty product “ Dermocapsule Gold Age Control Serum ” produced by the “Clinelle” is an attractive and awe-inspiring advertisement which rivet one's attention. A logical truth (also called an analytic truth or a necessary truth) is a statement which is true in all possible worlds or under all possible interpretations, as contrasted to a fact (also called a synthetic claim or a contingency) which is only true in this world as it has historically unfolded. A proposition such as “If p and q, then p.” is considered to be logical truth because it is true because of the meaning of the symbols and words in it and not because of any facts of any particular world. They are such that they could not be untrue. Therefore, based on this product’s quotation “happy skin, happy face”, it is truly valid because if we convert it to the hypothetical arguments it becomes “if we have happy skin, then we have happy face” as we are affirming the antecedent. Truth is an essential ingredient in any argument. Truth has a variety of meanings, such as the state of being in accord with fact or reality. It can also mean having fidelity to an original or to a standard argument. In a common usage, it also means constancy or sincerity in action or character. The direct opposite of truth is falsehood, which correspondingly unfollowed logical, factual, or ethical meanings. Theories to establish truth are pragmatism, coherence and correspondence which we are going to analyse critically in this “Dermocapsule Gold Age Control Serum” advertisement. Pragmatism is a philosophical tradition centered on the linking of practice and theory. It describes a process where theory is extracted from practice, and applied back to practice to form what is called intelligent practice. Important positions characteristic of pragmatism include instrumentalism, radical empiricism, verificationism, conceptual relativity, and fallibilism. In the other word pragmatism is a statement if it works. According to the advertisement chosen, from the model’s face expression we can see clearly that she looks very cheerful after using the “Clinelle” product. She said that “ I feel the love on my happy skin! And even all the years togeher, “Clinelle” keeps my skin glowing and youthful...it’s all making my face happy too”. Her reaction illustrates that “Clinelle” keeps her skin glowing and youthful, thus making her face happy too. Since she is using “Clinelle” beauty product for long time, she got glowing and youthful face as a result. Thereupon, the theory of pragmatism is accepted as it is true for the model and it assumes to become true in the future for others too. Coherence theory of truth regards truth as coherence within some specified set of sentences, propositions or beliefs. There is no single set of such "logical universes", but rather an assortment of perspectives that are commonly discussed under this title. A positive tenet is the idea that

Transcript: Group x presents Critical Thinking But what is critical thinking!! Critical thinking is a type of reasonable, reflective thinking that is aimed at deciding what to believe or what to do. It is a way of deciding whether a claim is always true, sometimes true, partly true, or false. Critical thinking clarifies goals, examines assumptions, discerns hidden values, evaluates evidence, accomplishes actions, and assesses conclusions. BUT! Critical thinking is self-directed, self-disciplined, self-monitored, and self-corrective thinking Now i will tell you five steps to better this critical thinking skill. 1. Identify and clarify the problem. 2. Gather information. 4. Consider alternatives and implications. 5. Choose and implement the best alternative. PUZZLES HERE!!
