Transcript: The main ideas of the presentation: poker mathematics makes you a winning player What are pot odds? Poker is a game of mathematics, where you should be able to calculate the odds of either you or your opponent winning the hand in any situation. Does the use of poker mathematics make you a winning player? knowledge of odds can only improve your game, and give you an advantage over players that do not use them. Do I need to learn mathematics to win money from poker? without a working knowledge of mathematics in poker you are severely limiting your potential. People can predict the weather in two different ways: 1.Using scientific research and data. 2.Using old wives’ tales and superstition. Which player do you think will do the best? 1.The girl that uses solid mathematical probability and odds to influence her decisions. 2. The girl that makes her decisions off of hunches and a perceived “sixth sense”. What are pot odds? Pot odds are often compared to the probability of winning a hand with a future card in order to estimate the call's expected value. Now say there are two people left in the pot, you and your opponent. There is $80 in the pot and your opponent bets $20. What should you do? 1] Calculating the "card odds". If we put this into a ratio it gives us 38:9, or roughly 4:1. 2] Compare with pot odds. Next we calculate the same ratio of odds using the size of the pot and the size of the bet. This makes our odds $100:$20 which works out to equal 5:1 pot odds. Card Odds: 4:1 Pot Odds: 5:1 Remember! You should only call if the pot odds are greater than the "card odds" Knowing mathematics makes you better in poker The internet sites I used: http://www.thepokerbank.com/strategy/mathematics/ Author: Neringa Pacevič MMT1 Poker Mathematics

Poker Presentation

Transcript: Poker • Deck of cards • Poker chips or money • 2-10 players • Table to play on • Dealer button • Small blind button • Big blind button •1 player is the dealer. •Player to the left of the dealer posts the small blind and the player to the left of the small blind posts the big blind. •Once the blinds are collected, some games collect antes. These are a small amount, usually ¼ of the small blind. Fortunately antes are not common in low stakes or home games. •Every player is dealt 2 cards face down. •After the dealing is done the first round of betting starts with the player to the left of the big blind. Their options in this situation are fold, call, or raise. •The dealer then burns one card and places 3 cards face up. •Another betting round starts this time from the left of the dealer. • The next step is for the dealer to burn another card and flip a single card this card is called the turn. • Another betting round the same as the last betting round • Once that betting round is finished the dealer burns a final card and flips another single card face up called the river. • The last betting round occurs. • At any point, if only one player remains that player wins the money in the middle and you repeat until a time limit is reached or one player is left with all the money. The only thing that changes is the dealer switches to the next player on the left of the previous dealer. The world series of poker started in 1970.
