Transcript: Nazi Germany The Golden Years 1924 - 1929 Gustav Stressemann Foreign Minister How did Gustav Stressemann help Germany recover? Gustav Stressemann Rentenmark Rentenmark In November 1923, Gustav Stressemann introducted the Rentenmark to solve Hyperinflation, this replaced the original German Mark which inflated when the Weimar Government printed out money to help pay the Reparations and debts. This then caused inflation, however this inflation was rapid, which was named Hyperinflatiom, where the value of money decreased but the prices increased. The Rentenmark was created based on property values, this then stopped the Hyperinflation. Dawes Plan Dawes Plan In 1924, an American banker called Charles Dawes created the Dawes Plan with Gustav Stressemann to aid Germany and rebuild its economy through US loans. The Dawes Plan changed Germany's Reparation payments by making it so that the payments where based on Germany's capacity to pay, the payments began at 1 billion marks for year one and increased over 4 years to 2.5 billion marks a year. In response to this France withdrew the troops that occupied the Ruhr. Also, the US gave loans to Germany, in total, almost $3 billion was given in loans, this helped Germany's economic recovery drastically. German Foreign Relations Relations with Other Countries Stressemann improved the foreign relations a lot. In 1925, he signed the Locarno Pact (along with France, Belgium, Britain and Italy), through this, Germany agreed to keep the existing borders, this ended the passive resistance from the Ruhr. After that, in September 1926, Germany became a member of the League of Nations. Finally, in 1928, Germany signed the Kellogg-Briand Pact (64 other nations also signed this pact), which meant that from then on, nations would keep the armies for only self-defence and other problems would be solved by peaceful means. Young Plan The final change to the reparations was in 1929, this added a timescale for each Reparation payment, then the Reparations were reduced from £6.6 billion to £1.85 billion, this made the Reparation payments more achievable for Germany. Young Plan What caused the end of Germany's Golden Years? End of The Golden Years In October 1929, the US stock market collapsed, this made the US banks go bust, this was known as the Wallstreet Crash. What followed after this was the Great Depression through all of the world. As a result of this, America recalled the loans from Germany, this led to another economic crisis in Germany. After this, the support in extremist parties opposing the Weimar Republic increased massively.

Oliver Lawrence North Marine Corps Officer, Military Historian,Born October 7 1943 Many people like Oliver North were convicted for being a part of second plan, because the law had prohibited anyone from aiding the Contras. "Let's start with the part that is the most controversial. A few months ago I told the American people I did not trade arms for hostages. My heart and my best intentions still tell me that's true, but the facts and the evidence tell me it is not. As the Tower board reported, what began as a strategic opening to Iran deteriorated, in its implementation, into trading arms for hostages. This runs counter to my own beliefs, to administration policy, and to the original strategy we had in mind. There are reasons why it happened, but no excuses. It was a mistake." (Iran-Contra Affair) Why- This secretive event changed people's impressions of Reagan and his Administration. If Reagan had been impeached, everything would have turned around. The new president could have decided to make totally different decisions. "List of Books by Oliver North." (Frankel, 90) Later presidential aids took blame for this illegal activity had hearings and talk of Reagan's impeachment had ended.
