Transcript: COMM 113 Code-Switching Charity Cohen October 2018 What is "code-switching"? What is "code-switching"? Definition Code-switching is the “process of shifting from one linguistic code (a language or dialect) to another, depending on the social context or conversational setting.” -Carlos D. Morrison, professor of communications at Alabama State University From one language to another Dialect-to-dialect Tone-to-tone Patterns of code-switching Patterns of code-switching Code-switching can be used in informal and professional settings People often code-switch during interviews, meetings, or formal conversations with our employers or employees Code-switching can be done during: Interviews Meetings Formal conversations with employees/employers Simple conversation Code-switching can be used in informal and professional settings Adapt, Connect, Understand! Code-switching is not synonymous for being inauthentic, it’s a form of adaptation to connect to either a particular environment, or group of people Code-switching allows one to adapt to their settings without losing an essence of themselves, while allowing others to understand them. Code-switching ≠ inauthenticity People code-switch to speak "mainstrem language" (Prof. Renee Black of NYU) “Many people switch languages or employ colloquialisms to express particular ideas” (Matt Thompson, NPR journalist) Code-Switching ≠ inauthenticity Code-switching is a way of adapting to certain situations or environments Code-switching can be used in both informal and formal settings Conclusion Gonzalez, Jennifer. “Know Your Terms: Code Switching.” Cult of Pedagogy, 14 June 2017, www.cultofpedagogy.com/code-switching/. Code Presentation

Transcript: 01 A toxic gas or vapour could be in the air from the chemicals Did you know?? Another code that should definitely be called in this video is a Code Orange indicating a Mass Casualty/Disaster. With that information, the potential risk posed by all electrical equipment presents an immediate fire hazard. 02 Inhaling any gas can cause respiratory issues especially for indiviuals who are in the ER who are immune compromised. 03 A Code Orange can be activated at any stage: Stage 1 - Alert Stage 2 - Partial Stage 3 - Full "Colour Coding" In the 1950s, the American Medical Association created a committee for Television, Radio and Motion Pictures to review scripts, confirm the accuracy of medical sets, and show actors how to correctly hold medical instruments. After this committee ended in the 1980s, producers weren’t required to consult with medical experts, which may be why some medical shows take so many liberties and can be less realistic! 04 The ER in this clip is essentially under crisis evacuation, defined as "Unexpected and immediate threat to life and/or safety and there is not time to plan for the evacuation" (Source: UBC Hospital Emergency Response and Code Manual) The Realities of working in healthcare Code Orange Guidelines Step One - Administrator will complete and send the Code Orange Email Notification Template. Step Two - Administrator will activate the Code Orange by dialing 7111 and providing them with all the pertinent information. Step Three - Administrator will establish an EOC (Emergency Operations Centre). Step Four - All staff, including unit clerks, to listen for further instructions. Step Five - All units will prepare to receive patients in their work area. Step Six - Implement fan-out calls. Training for a Code Orange In addition to calling a Code Brown, why might Code Red and Code Green also potentially be called? Hospitals are required to train for these scenarios at least once every four years. For example, in April 2019 many hospitals within Vancouver Coastal Health participated in a Code Orange exercise in conjunction with a major plane crash exercise at YVR. Also, in October 2023 at Victoria General Hospital, staff and volunteer students participated in an exercise, where forty students acted as casualties of a serious bus crash to help train hospital staff on the protocols for a Code Orange. The importance of understanding codes and procedures is crucial to staying organized in a time of chaos. Realistic Aspects Emergency codes in healthcare are standardized alerts used in hospitals to quickly communicate urgent emergencies without causing panic to patients! Sources: Youtube - Code Orange exercise: Preparing for emergencies together | 2019 Cheknews.ca - Students and hospital staff train for mass casualty event at Vic General This video depicts a mass casualty event as a nearby building has recently collapsed. Assuming Stage 2 or Stage 3 Code Orange protocols, here are some guidelines from UBC Hospital, Vancouver, that were applied in the video: To begin, we would like to acknowledge that the University of the Fraser Valley is located on the traditional unceded territory of the Stó:lō people. We pay respect to these peoples and their elders, past and present, and acknowledge that we are privileged to use and share this land. Thank you. 1) "Assume primary responsibility of directing/coordinating activities of Code Orange" The Dr. stepped in as designate to lead. This could be realistic if no other designate/administrator is available. 2) "Implement patient discharge and transfers, as necessary" and "Cease all non-urgent work" The Dr. asked for non-urgent cases to be sent home 3)"Modify and expand work activities as necessary" Decisions were made to move critical care patients to the cafeteria with portable monitors, oxygen cylinders and other proper medical supplies True or False Before we conclude, see if you can answer the following 3 questions! The answers are found in the slideshow. Healthcare involves many realities, codes, practices and procedures. A Code Orange only affects the emergency department. 2. In a code brown, what is the 30/30 rule when identifying the size of a spill? 1. Which 4 emergency codes were mentioned in the slideshow? This video gives an example of a hospital setting during a time of emergency. True or False Realistic Aspects While watching this video, think about what potential code(s) you observe in this situation? False! During a Code Orange, other areas of the hospital need to listen for directions and prepare to receive patients as well, depending on the scope of the disaster. Answer: Brown, Red, Green and Orange Answer: less than 30l is a small spill; more than 30l is a large spill While this scene starts off with chemical contamination, new patients start to enter the Emergency Department (ED) due to a building collapse. This caused confusion amongst the ED staff and the paramedics bringing in new patients. However, the arguing and confusion seems
