Transcript: Chess basics & pieces by: Fernando this chess board is very amazing it pops open and then you can put all the chess peices up so there not scaterd out. this is amazing its a chess board. the difference between chess & checkers is that checkers is to simple & chess is a little harder to put down so it's challanging & you dont have to jump over each other you land on them. the pawn the rook the bishop the queen the king the knight First off the king he can go any way but can't go far. Next is the queen she is the best piece & the most powerfulest she can go anyway & can go far. Next is the rook he can go far but only straight.he might look like a castle but he is not a castle. The Knight can go in an L & can jump over his team but wont kill them like in checkers. the bishope can only go diagnle on his color right on black left one on white. The pawn is your weakest he can only go up 2 spaces on his first move all his other moves he can go 1 square up. If your enemy is diagnle to you,you can attack but only if there are in front of you. If your pawn gets all the way to the other end you get to trade it in for another like your queen but not your king they don't even have to be dead. The percent of people in G.W.Carvers chess club is 16% &the decimal is 0.16 . A fraction would be 16% out of 500%. There is also computer chess ,see chess can be found anywere. Transcript: How to Play chess: BISHOP QUEEN KNIGHT The knight, also known as the horse is the only piece that can jump over another piece. It moves in a L. Every time it moves, the color of the tile changes. There are two of these pieces on a team. One starts off on the white tile and another on the black tile. It is worth 3 points like the bishop. (coming up) ROOK A bishop, moves sideways. (diagonally) It's worth 3 points. There are 2 of these on one team like the knight. One bishop is on the white tile and another is on the black tile. Why should I tell you? Go find out yourself. LOL:) The rook, also known as an elephant. The rook is worth 5 points. Just like the bishop and knight there are two of these on a team, one of a white tile and another on a black tile.It moves forward, backward and side to side. Make way for the queen! No, not Queen Isabella or Elizabeth, but the queen in chess! The queen moves.... EVERYWHERE! No joke. It is a combination of the rook, bishop and pawn. Rook = 5 points. Bishop = 3 points. Pond = ... I meant Pawn = not Pond. Be quiet your messing me up. Pawn = 1 point. What do you get when you add it up? 9! That's how much the queen is worth, 9 points. Pieces of Chess A pawn, not POND, a PAWN, is only worth 1 point although there are 8 of these on a team unlike the knight, bishop, rook and queen. Chess provides a creative environment for students to practice analytical and logic puzzles using strategy, geometric spatial relationships, combined resource utilization and time management all in a game the students enjoy. Our program accommodates all levels of students from the first-time beginner to the seasoned tournament player. Students can continue to develop as players by joining the after school chess club or participating on the school tournament chess team. Health topics are closely related to science and will include concepts such as basic hygiene, nutrition, benefits of exercise, safety and first aid. Physical education is the application of individual skills in a team sport environment. The curriculum includes a variety of developmental activities emphasizing fine and gross motor skills as well as to help our students keep fit through organized activities and lessons that focus on, control and coordination of movement, agility, balance fitness, respect for rules and sportsmanship. The visual arts curriculum generates enthusiasm for art as well as different cultural and historical connections. Through the exploration of a variety of artists, art processes and art experiences, students have the opportunity to develop higher thinking and creative problem solving skills. By infusing art into the curriculum, we enhance the opportunities for academic success for all students and help to develop right-brain associated functions to improve functioning in the workplace and beyond. Transcript: By: Taylor Dubinski What Is Norse/ Viking Art? Deeper Look Into The Lewis Chess Pieces Viking art was most commonly found on everyday objects. The Lewis Chess Pieces incorporate all major social classes found during the Middle Ages. The origin of the word Viking comes from both Old Norse and Old English The Lewis Chess Pieces represent a symbol of European culture. The Lewis Chess Pieces test the boundaries of what is considered Norse/Viking art. Due to multiple raids Norse/ Viking art incorporates many different art forms from many different cultures. • The King- Represents both the English and Norse Kings both of which were very important. Norse Kings fought in battle with their men to show them that they all were on the same social level. • The Priest- Represents the Christian priests. Many of them believed the Vikings were illiterate and evil. The Norse culture did not have priests, instead they had oracles. Oracles could be found in every village. They had powers that would let them contact the gods and see the future. People would often visit them to see if they would be accepted into Valhalla and what their future looked like. • The Knight- Represents both Viking warriors and everyday people. In Norse society everyone could own a weapon and fight. This goes for men, women and slaves. The type of weapon a person had told what social class they belonged to. History of The Lewis Chess Pieces The Viking Age officially started in the year 793 and ended in the year 1500. The Vikings (a part of the Norse Culture), lived in an area of Europe called Scandinavia. 1. Norway 2.Sweden 3. Denmark 4. Finland 5. Scotland ( Considered a part of Norway during the Viking Age. ) The Vikings raided Northern, Southern, Western, and Eastern Europe. Deeper Look Into The Lewis Chess Pieces • The Vikings are often known as a barbaric culture who fought and waged war both for conquering purposes as well as pleasure. • Fighting was a part of everything they did. Even when it came to religion. • They believed in a polytheistic religion (many gods), who fought and were as equally barbaric as the vikings themselves. • Unlike many other religions the Norse people believed that their gods were meant to be worshiped but not to be fully trusted. Many of the Norse Gods had two sides to them a good side and an evil one. • The ultimate goal in a Vikings life was to go to Valhalla. Valhalla was similar to heaven. The only way to go to Valhalla was if Odin ( The Alfather) believed that you had died heroically in battle and represented a true warrior when you were alive. Viking Culture Lewis Chess Pieces Found in the sand dunes of Uig. Which is located on the Western coast of the Isle of Lewis in the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles). Located in Scotland. Year found 1831 They were created sometime in the 12th-13th century. Around the years 1150-1200. During this time Scotland was a part of Scandinavia (specifically the Kingdom of Norway) There is a total of 93 pieces, 78 of which are chessman and 14 are tables men. Originally, the pieces were stained red, but have since turned a white oak color. Height: 60-100 mm Carved out of walrus teeth and ivory. Historians believe that the Lewis Chess Pieces were created by a merchant living in Norway (present day Scotland) and planned on selling his creation in Ireland. Physical Link between Norway and the Western Isles • Viking Art had many influences from other countries especially England and Rome. • The Lewis Chess Pieces are a great example of an art style called Romanesque. • Romanesque art is a mixture of art styles from the fusion of Roman, Carolingian, Ottonian, Byzantine, and Germanic art. • It is very different from Norse art because it deals with linear lines and shapes. • Every Piece in the Lewis Chess Pieces represents a social class Víkingr- Pirate (Old Norse) 3 Important Facts and Ideas • The Queen- Represents the English Queens, these queens did not fight like the Norse ones did. Origin Of Vikings • The Standing Warders- Represent Berserk warriors. These warriors are a apart of Norse mythology. It is said that these warriors lived to fight and constantly bit their shields to help contain their excitement before a battle. Stories often tell of these warriors wearing animal skins and becoming similar to savage beasts during fights. These warriors could not be killed.
