Transcript: Boxing Day Because christmas is the day before boxing day, the decorations usually relate to christmas. Churches put neon red lights around them Some traditions on boxing day are to give presents to servants and service members. They also give money and food to the poor. Servants even get the day off! For families, a tradition is that families feast, and play traditional games. The reason for boxing day is to celebrate the death of the first christian to die. st. In recent times the day has become synonymous with sport. Horse racing is particularly popular with meets all over the country. Many top football teams also play on Boxing Day.
