Transcript: In partnership with the Regional Water Quality Control Board, Los Angeles Region (Los Angeles Regional Board) the Rose Foundation is piloting a new grants program to support water related projects that benefit and involve underserved, vulnerable, or otherwise disadvantaged communities in its design and implementation. Grants awarded through this program are through Supplemental Environmental Project (SEP) payments that may be used to satisfy part of administrative civil liabilities imposed by the Water Board. Since the program helps direct future SEP payments to community-based water quality projects, the purpose of the application process is to develop an initial Project List for the Los Angeles Region. The Rose Foundation for Communities and the Environment is a grantmaking public charity that specializes in administering mitigation payments and class-action settlement awards, and using these funds to support grassroots-based conservation, social justice, and consumer protection projects in close conformance with the nexus of the specific settlement. For over 25 years, Rose has received mitigation payments from more than 400 settlements, helping to enable more than $50 million in community grants in California, Washington, and other states. The result of this process is a pilot list of projects that we recommend the Regional Board to adopt. Many of the projects are scalable in nature and the actual work could be adjusted to fit available funding as SEPs are finalized, ensuring maximum efficiency and expediting project launch. Any such adjustments, and all workplan deliverables, would be quantified in enforceable grant contracts between the Rose Foundation and the project organization. 1 Map: Boundaries of the Regional Board - Region 4 Overview The great majority, fourteen (63.6%) applicants have “Other” as project strategies. These include: • Community outreach, education, and assistance designed to encourage water conservation and pollution reduction in underserved, vulnerable, disadvantaged communities • Producing a guidance document to provide a community blueprint for other possible natural infrastructure investments in low income urban areas • Experiential education • Development of an environmental education program for environmental justice communities • Guided excursions into the target watershed areas while providing education and leadership training to reduce water pollution and harmful development Thursday, October 10, 2019 PROCESS NOTE: Even if approved to be on the Project List, there is no guarantee that projects will be funded, and there is no deadline for when actual funding decisions will be announced Rose Foundation Number of projects: 26 Range of amounts: $45k - 500k Average amount: $253,047 Average project duration: 27 mos WHAT HAPPENS NEXT? 22 2019 Pilot Program for Communities and the Environment Final Project List is determined by the Regional Board. Rose Under Fire Book Presentation

Transcript: Overview of the Book 'Rose Under Fire' by Elizabeth Wein is about Rose Justice (a fictional character) who was a young American pilot captured by the Nazis during World War II. The themes of the story include toughness, friendship, and the harsh stories faced by women in war, mainly in concentration camps. The genre of the magnificent book is historical ficton. Historical fiction means that the story is mixed up with actual events along with the author's imagination. Second Reason Why Introduction to 'Rose Under Fire' The second reason why you should read Rose Under Fire is because World War 11 is someting everyone should learn about. It's extremely important to learn about the past so we don't make the same miserable mistakes. “Those who do not learn history are doomed to repeat it.” - George Santayana. Although, sometimes history can become dreadful , Rose Under Fire happily changes that idea. Even though 'Rose Under Fire' isn't based on a true story, it still lets you understand how terrible it was living during World War 11 and to appreciate everyone around you for being the reason you're living a great and mostly fair life. Author's Background Elizabeth Wein is know for her young adult historical fiction. She was born in New York Ciry on October 2, 1964 (59 years old) and moved to England at the age of three. Then three years later, she moved to Jamaica and lived there for three years until she ended back at USA. She went to Yale University, spent a work-study year in England, and then spent seven years getting a PhD in Folklore at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. She's married to games developer Tim Gatland and they have two grown children that were happily raised in Scotland. First Reason Why 4 : Irena 1 : Rose Franklin The first reason why you should read 'Rose Under Fire' is because it had amazing foreshadowing and plot twists that will keep you hooked. It will be a long time before you put the book down once you've already opened it. Some books, you have to wait until the midde to like it but for Rose Under Fire, it's the opposite. The book is filled with miserable times along with some jolly ones. Irena is a female fighter pilot and military ace for the Soviet air force (mentioined on first slide). Rose Franklin (the main character) met Irena during one of the roll calls that they had every day. They both found it interesting that they both had something in common - being a type of pilot. Roza despises her because she's Russian but seems to get along with her later on in the book. Irena has an incredible talent for smuggling items and creating things out of them. She even made a kite has a SOS message to the outer world. Read the book to find out if her incredible idea leads her to freedom or not! Rose Justice is a young pilot working for Air Transport Auxiliary during World War 11. On her way back from a semi-secret flight during the war, Rose is captured by the Germans and ends up in Ravensbrück, a hideous women concentration camp controlled by the Nazis. She's created many realistic poems about Ravensbrück. There, she meets an unforgettable group of women, including a once elegant and admired French detective novelist whose Jewish husband and three young sons have been killed, a tough young girl who was a human guinea pig for Nazi doctors trying to learn how to treat German war wounds, and a female fighter pilot and military ace for the Soviet air force. Characters 3 : Roza 2 : Lisette Roza is a stubborn eleven year old who was forced to watch the cruel Nazis beat her mom to death. She was a human guinea pig for the Nazi doctors trying to learn how to treat German war wounds. The Nazi doctors removed a few bones from her leg causing her to need crutches to walk. The women who were operated on by the Nazis were called rabbits. In the real world, there are only a couple of Ravensbrück rabbit survivors. Read the book to find out if she escapes and tells the world about her awful experience at Ravensbrück or not! Lisette is the "mother" of the group of four. She was a once elegant and admired French detective novelist whose Jewish husband and three young sons have been killed. Lisette is considered the mom of the group because she was happily the oldest. She's been through many tough times but keeps moving on. She's extremely pleasant to the girls but can get irritated when they don't listen. Read the book to find out if she manages to survive Ravensbrück and lead her group to freedom or not!
