School Traditions: Location: Baylor's mascot consists of two North American Black Bears, Judge Joy and Judge Lady. On December 14, 1914, the students of Baylor voted to have a bear represent the University as mascot. In 1974, the decision was made for the mascots to be called "Judge" followed by a surname, in honor of the mascot that served Baylor from 1961 to 1971. Dr Pepper Hour started out as Matinee Coffee Hour in 1952 when Mrs. Marie Mathis, assistant to the dean of the Student Union Building, began to serve coffee every week in the Barfield Drawing Room. The event often featured piano music and board games to allow the Baylor community to socialize and escape the typical school day. In 1953, Mrs. Mathis added hot chocolate, then frosted Coca-Cola when it got warmer outside. Until July of 1997, Coca-Cola was mixed with ice cream for the floats. Since then, Dr Pepper has become the official soft drink of the university, and thus the traditional gathering became known as "Dr Pepper Hour." These can be scheduled individually or as a special group visit on the Baylor Website. There are many traditions at Baylor. The bear won by little more than half of the 406 votes cast. Since then more than 50 North American Black Bears have called Baylor home.
