SCIN130 Presentation: Sunflower
Transcript: SCIN130 Organism Profile Presentation Location of Study: Fort Bliss, TX How does the sunflower obtain and store its energy? The sunflower (IFAS) is a crucial necessity for small birds who migrate for shelter. They provide safety before the birds feed and continue with their migration. The sunflower provides a bountiful habitat for bird populations and in return the birds feed on small, succulent insects such as grasshoppers that can do major crop damage (2003, August 22). The Sunflower The sunflower (Wind Energy) obtains its energy directly from the sun's light and rays. It stores its energy through a process called photosynthesis. Due to it's uniqueness, another process known as heliotropism occurs, in which the sunflower absorbs energy with in its response to the direction of the sun's travel similar to solar panels (2012, August 15). Common Name: The Sunflower The sunflower (Biology: The Dynamic Science) stores most of its energy within the seeds. Birds, insects, rodents, and humans consume them for its chemical energy. Upon it's death, decomposers such as bacteria and fungi feed on the remains which are then recycled back into the life cycle of the plant (2013, p.4). Habitat cont. Biotic Interactions cont. Reproductive Ecology cont. by Enrique Decal References The sunflower ("All about sunflower") is found throughout North and Central America. Between the 16th and 19th centuries, cultivation developments grew in Europe. During the turn of the 19th century, the sunflower was recognized commercially in both North America and Europe. Dry, open areas and prairies with lots of sun and nutrient-rich soil is what the sunflower enjoys the most (2014). The pistol ("Three unique qualities of sunflowers") consists of the style, stigma, and ovary. It is the female reproductive organ located on the tiny florets of the sunflower's head. The male reproductive organ is classified as the pistol which is made up of the anther and the filament. The anther consists of pollen grains which is located at the tip with the filament. The anther is attached to the filament to provide stability. Together they form the androecium which can consists of more than one stamen (2014, August 30).
