Transcript: Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority Incorporated Made by: Diana L. White OVERVIEW A.K.A. Alpha Kappa Alpha Was founded on the campus of Howard University in 1908. Since then, the sorority has flourished into a globally-impactful organization of nearly 300,000 college-trained members, bound by the bonds of sisterhood and empowered by a commitment to servant-leadership that is both domestic and international in its scope. HISTORY HISTORY Ethel Hedgeman was the founder of Alpha Kappa Alpha. She dreamed of creating a support network for women, resulting in the first Negro Greek-letter sorority. TIMELINE TIMELINE 2000s 1980s 1900 Promoted Negro culture and encouraged social action through presentation of Negro artists and social justice advocates Adopted more than 27 African villages, earning Africare’s 1986 Distinguished Service Award; encouraged awareness of and participation in the nation’s affairs, registering more than 350, 000 new voters; and established the Alpha Kappa Alpha Educational Advancement Foundation Donated $1 million to Howard University to fund scholarships and preserve Black culture REGIONS REGIONS For more efficient administration, chapters are grouped by the Boulé into regions. The organization is organized into ten regions; each under the supervision of a Regional Director. The ten chapters in the U.S. LOCATIONS FOUNDERS FOUNDERS Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority was founded on January 15, 1908 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. Its founders were among the fewer than 1,000 Negroes enrolled in higher education institutions in 1908 and the 25 women who received Bachelor of Arts degrees from Howard University between 1908 and 1911.
