The 1980s was an era rich in social and political reform, technological and economical growth, and known as the golden era of horror films. Mostly remembered for being the age of materialism, consumerism, and the New York City yuppies, the 80s were surely a time to be alive. Attempted Assasination of Reagan - Reagan was shot in the chest and arm - Shooter is John Warnock Hinckley Jr. - Attempt was unsuccesful - Reagan has life threatening wounds and received surgery March 30, 1981 Two months into office, the president was targeted. First woman in supreme court September 21, 1981 Sandra Day O'Connor, becomes the first woman to serve in supreme court - Nominated and appointed by Ronald Reagan. - Described as a "classic conservative" November 6, 1984 Regan is re-elected. Regeanomics - Focused mostly on tax reductions, budget cuts, and monetary policy - Lowered the tax rate -30% and federal budget by $41M in attempt to stimulate the economy ECONOMICS - The budget cuts were aimed at social welfare programs -Succesfully treated inflaton by lowering production of the dollar Strategic Defense Initiative (SDI) -Made to protect the U.S. from Soviet nuclear missile threats in space by ruining their systems - 1981, Reagan signed off on the NSDD -Organizes and assigns procedures for SDI as well as planning for broadcasting the news - 1983 the SDI was announced to the world and faced backlash from Americans and other governments STAR WARS - Initial plan proved uneffective and focused instead on smaller missile projects The aimed cost was to be $400B-$800B WAR ON DRUGS DOMESTIC A FEDERAL ATTEMPT TO STOP ILLEGAL DRUG USAGE. AFFAIRS Just Say No! 1984 - Nancy Reagan campaigned in the U.S to discourage young people from using illegal drugs. - Coined the phrase "Just say No" and educated teens on many ways to turn down peer pressure. -Cooperated with the Girl Scouts of America and other national organizations in clubs to share awareness. 1986 Anti-Drug Abuse Act - Congress passed the Act that established a minimum sentencing for possesions of illegal drugs Though it proved beneficial at first, the act was later found to trigger racist sentencings.
